If you want to create a smaller version of the jungle in your home, an indoor palm tree is a great option, and preferably more than one. She is unpretentious, grows happily and happily, and does not require much attention. But make no mistake – plants still require care. Which? Below we have listed the basic rules for “keeping” a palm tree. Read and put into practice.
The soil
First of all, you should choose the right soil, because otherwise all subsequent efforts will be pointless. Suitable soil is a loose, porous mixture. A combination of peat moss and perlite (or vermiculite) or shredded bark is suitable. You can simply purchase soil specifically for growing palm trees; it should contain the necessary components. A peat mixture with vermiculite retains moisture well. Palm trees do not really like to be replanted (they can grow in one pot for more than 3 years), so be sure to think about filling the pot.
How to trim a palm tree at home
Pruning of the plant should be done during the period of active growth, which occurs from the beginning of spring to the end of summer. If the procedure is performed in winter, the palm tree will take a long time to recover from the stress it has experienced and may become ill or die.
Shoots are trimmed in the following cases:
- the need for palm rejuvenation;
- formation of an attractive crown;
- reproduction by sprouting roots on shoots;
- prevention from various kinds of diseases.
A store-bought palm tree with one trunk needs pruning, otherwise it will gradually become taller and the lower leaves will fall off. Pruning is carried out provided that the height of the trunk is at least 30 cm. The top 10 cm of the plant are pinched off. Over time, about five branches will appear on the trunk. You should select the three strongest ones and remove the rest. The shoots should be freely located on the palm tree, without interfering or overlapping each other.
Pruning the three main branches will help make the crown fluffy and stop the leaves from falling off. They are pinched off at the top, then 2-3 dormant buds that hatch after the procedure are selected. Pruning at the same height will allow you to form a lush crown, while at different heights it will ensure the creation of a large multi-tiered plant.
Watering
Palm trees are not too picky about the water regime, but it is still better to monitor their watering. This way they will grow better and stay fresh. It is recommended to water the plant about once a week to keep the soil moderately moist at all times. The soil should not be allowed to become very dry, especially during the summer months (this is their active growing season). In winter, you can take long breaks in distributing water. You can spray the plant a couple of times a month to remove dust from the leaves and refresh them.
In general, it is better if a home palm tree is underwatered than flooded. Excessive humidity is fatal to these plants. If you are afraid of making mistakes with watering, you can buy a special device for measuring soil moisture. And also before planting, for the same purposes, be sure to place a layer of drainage on the bottom of the pot (this can be karamzit, pebbles, etc.).
Finger dates
The palmate date (another name is the date palm) grows in the wild and has a remarkable appearance. It can be successfully cultivated in ordinary apartment conditions. Domestic specimens of the plant are practically no different from their wild counterparts, except for their smaller size. A palm tree of this variety grows up to 2 m at home. To make the crop more compact, trim its top in a timely manner.

Light and humidity
Palm trees have no special requirements for light. It would be more correct to say that they do not tolerate direct sun, so it is better to place your plant in a shady place in the room. For the owner, this condition is easier to fulfill than to constantly worry about proper lighting for his “pet”. But the plant will not survive in complete darkness either, so create neutral light for the palm tree.
You also need to pay attention to the humidity in the room. The room should not be too dry; avoid using air conditioners. In winter, keep the palm tree away from radiators, fireplaces and other heating devices.
Weddel Coconut
The Weddel coconut palm grows well indoors. True, its appearance will be spectacular and catchy only if the most suitable conditions are created. Palm trees of this variety grow well in the presence of high-quality lighting, optimal temperature conditions, daily watering and suitable humidity conditions.
The decorative palm is an indoor flower that needs to be properly cared for. If all care requirements are met, the exotic culture will delight you with a luxurious appearance.

Fertilizer
Fertilize your palm tree every one and a half to two months from early spring to late fall to ensure the plant receives the optimal amount of nutrients during its growth period. You can buy a special fertilizer for palm trees and add it to the soil.
Keep in mind when choosing a fertilizer that domestic palm trees are extremely sensitive to chemical fertilizers. Using them will do more harm than good. It’s better to buy organic mixtures, or don’t feed them at all.
How to care for an indoor palm tree
The plant thrives in the sun, so it should not be placed in dark areas of the room. Without proper lighting, the palm tree will stop growing and then die altogether. During the period of very active sun (end of June - July), between 11 and 15 hours of the day, it is better to cover the plant from direct exposure to rays. This can be done using window tulle.
The optimal temperature depends on the type of palm tree, but if you average this indicator, it will be in the range of 24-27 degrees. In winter, the plant should be protected from sudden changes in temperature, which for varieties brought from a tropical climate should be 16-24 degrees, from a subtropical climate - 8-12 degrees.
How to water a palm tree at home
Watering and moistening a palm tree is based on the following rules:
- The water used must be soft. Collected rainwater or purified water is a good option. Using tap water will lead to oversaturation of the top layer of soil with salts: the soil will become hard, which will require its annual replacement.
- Water for irrigation should not be cold; its temperature can vary between 14-25 degrees.
- If you are forced to use tap water, you must let it sit for two days. This will significantly reduce the amount of chlorine it contains.
- At the height of summer, the palm tree should be moistened by spraying the leaves on both sides. In winter, after turning on the heating, air humidity is also at a low level, which requires installing an air humidifier or hanging the radiators with wet towels.
- The top layer of soil in the pot must be loosened after watering to ensure access of oxygen to the roots and removal of excess moisture.
Pests
Spider mites are the most common pests of indoor palm trees. To scare them away, you need to maintain a high level of air humidity at the location of the plant.
If you find any damage to the leaves of the plant, take immediate action. Instead of chemical pesticides for houseplant pests, use neem oil. Mix it with water and spray it on the palm tree - works great.
Neanta
Neanta palms are also of interest to lovers of ornamental plants. It is better to buy the crop in a flower shop or nursery when it is still in the small sprout stage. As soon as you move it into the house, immediately transplant the culture into a large container. Next, the main task of the grower becomes to provide a favorable microclimate for the development of Neanta.
A luxurious plant with an extensive foliage crown will decorate your room in a couple of years. Until this moment, the indoor Neanta palm tree requires plenty of moisture and good lighting. If all care conditions are met, the crop will bloom with beautiful yellow flowers at the top, which will later be replaced by berry fruits.

- Dracaena reflex is an unpretentious palm tree that loves moist air, a warm and bright place. It removes formaldehyde contained in paints, curtains and floor coverings, as well as benzene found in synthetic fibers and dyes.
- Ficus benjamina - absorbs trichlorethylene vapors, which are contained in glue and detergents, and phenol.
- Chlorophytum crested - destroys harmful compounds of exhaust gases, tobacco smoke, and humidifies the air.
Interesting fact

- cleans the air of various chemical impurities;
- saturates it with useful minerals and salts;
- It is recommended to keep it in the apartment for people who have cardiovascular diseases;
- Suitable for calming nerves.
Today we told you what kind of plant is hidden under the name “Lady” palm. Easy care. The main thing is to follow some recommendations regarding the maintenance of indoor flowers.
Transfer
After the quarantine is over, the palm tree is moved to a permanent place and given the opportunity to get used to the new environment. After two weeks, you can transplant it into a new container of larger volume - there should be a free space of 2-3 cm between the lump of earth and the wall. The culture is characterized by slow growth, so in a large pot the soil will begin to turn sour.
When replanting, use a special soil for palm trees, adding a little coarse sand, or prepare the soil mixture yourself:
- turf soil, humus or leaf soil (2 parts each) + high-moor peat, rotted manure, coarse sand (1 part each) + charcoal (several medium-sized pieces);
- humus, turf soil, peat (1 part each) + perlite (1/2 part);
- sand, peat, humus (1 part each) + turf soil (3 parts);
- special soil for palm trees (5 parts) + any baking powder (2 parts): coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, pine sawdust, small brick chips, small pieces of tree bark or pumice;
- equal parts of fertile turf, humus, peat chips, perlite (vermiculite).
There is no need to free the roots from the ground - it is better to replant in a coma, after watering the plant. Fill a third of the pot’s volume with drainage (expanded clay, crushed stone, a mixture of crushed stone and sand), pour over the lump, fill the voids with soil, lightly compact to remove air, water generously and place the flower in a shaded place for 3-5 days. At first it has enough moisture, so watering is not required for several days. They begin to feed after 3-5 months.
In the future, transplantation of young Hamedorea is carried out at intervals of 2-3 years, choosing the time in the middle or end of spring. An adult plant is replanted when the root system has grown greatly and there is not enough room for it in the pot, when the soil needs to be replaced. If an old pot is used, then it needs to be washed with soap, rinsed with clean water and disinfected with potassium permanganate, chlorhexidine, and the drainage changed.
