From a botanical point of view, all indoor Saintpaulias are hybrids. But over time, so many varieties were bred that the classification changed a little.
Hybrid violets in modern floriculture are varieties that have hybrid changes relative to old, classic varieties.
Signs of hybridization include:
- unusual types of flowering - wasp violet, non-flowering Saintpaulias, very large flowers, double and other species atypical for classic Saintpaulias;
- unusual foliage - variegated, elongated, girl-, bastle-leaves, as well as twisted and abundantly wavy;
- rosette shape – ampel and trailer varieties;
- bush size - micro-mini, mini, semi-mini and large bushes, can be considered hybrids, the standard size is 20-40 cm. One can doubt the relationship between semi-mini and large bushes, but the miniatures are 100% hybrid;
- The color of the flowers - one-color, two-tone and some two-tone can be called standards, and chimeras, fantasy-colored flowers and other types are classified as hybrids.
Important! Sometimes a variety may seem standard but not be, and sometimes vice versa. It depends on small features that may not be noticed initially.
For example, hybrids include:
- Earl and Joyce (variegated chimera);
