Feng Shui about begonia

Supporters of the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui claim that begonia has very strong energy, which it draws from two elements: fire and water. Most often, plants are controlled by one element. This is how feng shui followers explain the powerful energy of the bush.

Royal Begonia Cupcake.

According to the observations of Chinese science experts, the plant can be of great benefit to representatives of the older generation; it will restore vitality, help cope with diseases, and strengthen the nervous system.

Allergy sufferers, asthmatics and people with other problems with the respiratory system can also safely purchase begonia for home due to its ability to purify the air, rid it of toxins and allergens.

Begonia spotted.

If we consider people's temperaments, representatives of feng shui science believe that this plant is suitable for any personality type. She will push phlegmatic and inert representatives to action and help them make the right decisions.

According to Feng Shui followers, the location of the begonia is also important.

It should not be placed next to cacti, as it does not tolerate such proximity. In addition, there is no need to place the plant directly opposite the door, as this will weaken it and lose its energetic properties.

Expert advice

In order for the plant to please its household, experts advise providing it with proper care.

The plant, originally from the tropics, prefers humidity and good light. It should be watered abundantly, avoiding spraying, which can harm the fragile leaves. In winter, it is better to leave the begonia alone, put it in a cooler place and reduce the amount of watering. You should know that begonia requires annual replanting, otherwise the plant will gradually begin to die.

Royal begonia Griffin.

Believing in the signs and superstitions associated with this house plant is everyone’s business. One thing is certain: begonia has a beautiful appearance and a number of beneficial qualities that have been studied from a scientific point of view.

If you decide to have this plant, remember that it has very strong energy. Therefore, it is best to take a sprout from good friends, or buy it in a small flower shop. This way you won’t bring the energy of other people’s illnesses and troubles into your home.

About a thousand species of decorative deciduous Begonias have been registered to date. Their classification is very complex, constantly changing, none of its options is recognized by all flower growers. In this article, we do not aim to understand all the intricacies of classifications. We will introduce you only to the most popular and often sold species, varieties and hybrids, of which there have recently been more than 10 thousand. Our goal will rather be to talk about the most general techniques and rules for growing, planting, caring for and propagating these wonderfully beautiful flowers.

Conventionally, for convenience of description on our website, we will divide all Begonias into groups:

1. Tuberous or garden or outdoor is best suited for growing in the garden.

2. Ever-blooming begonia - suitable for growing both at home and in the garden.

3. Decorative deciduous begonia, indoor, indoor - suitable only for growing indoors or in a winter garden.

The most popular types of decorative deciduous Begonias:

BEGONIA ROYAL, OR ROYAL, OR BEGONIA REX (Begonia rex):

It was with this species that at the end of the 19th century the widespread fascination with indoor decorative foliage Begons began. Begonia royal or regal is a perennial herbaceous plant with a rhizome (rhizome is an underground shoot that performs the functions of a rhizome, but has buds, modified leaves and roots), growing in the form of a bush of different heights depending on the variety. On a thick, succulent lodging stem, which is essentially a continuation of the rhizome, Begonia Rex produces very beautiful leaves on its petioles, the color, shape and texture of which are the subject of collecting these plants. The leaves of Begonias of this species have a specific asymmetrical heart-shaped shape, slightly curved to one side with a pointed tip. The leaves have a rough, velvety texture, with thickened central veins protruding from the underside. They can have a variety of colors from emerald or dark green to burgundy, silver with lilac shades, as well as a variety of patterns in the form of spots, stripes and strokes. The petiole and leaves on the reverse side are covered with reddish hairs.

Royal Begonia flowers are small, whitish or pink in color, round, on long peduncles and have no decorative value, and, as a rule, are removed immediately after the peduncles appear, so that the plant does not waste energy and nutrients on them.

Based on this species, breeders have developed a huge number of hybrids and cultivars to suit every taste - very small and compact, huge and bushy, with small or very large leaves of various shapes, from heart-shaped to maple-shaped, and fancy colors. (See “Hybrid begonia” below.)

One of the most popular varieties of Begonia Rex is “Begonia-Snail” or “Escargot” - in this variety, 2 parts of the base of the leaf at the point of attachment to the petiole are strongly twisted and overlap each other, which is further emphasized by the pattern on the leaves in in the form of curls like on a snail's house (Escargot is the French name for snails). The leaves are heart-shaped, pointed, the middle of the leaf is dark green, separated from the same leaf border by a wide light green silver stripe, which “curls” at the base, giving such a remarkably beautiful pattern.

RED LEAF BEGONIA (Begonia erythrophylla) OR (Beefsteak Begonia):

Hybrid between Begonia manicata X Begonia hydrocotylifolia. It has round, slightly beveled, shiny bright green leaves. Named red-leaved for the burgundy-red hue of the underside of the leaf. The flowers are pink, small, collected in a lush inflorescence on low, erect, numerous peduncles, quite decorative. It grows well in breadth and can acquire an ampelous shape in adulthood due to the lodging stem and leaves hanging over the edge of the pot. A very unpretentious and stable hybrid.

BEGONIA BAUER, OR TIGER, OR TIGER FEET (Begonia bowerae):

A very spectacular and very easy to care for Decorative Leafy Begonia. The leaves are heart-shaped, pointed, the lower edges of the leaf plate at the point of departure from the petiole are rounded and overlap each other, on a dark greenish-brown background there are bright green spots, like traces of a tiger’s paw pads. also bright green. The flowers are small white or cream on long stalks in loose racemes. Belongs to the rhizome Begonias. Prefers diffused light and can grow in partial shade. If there is a need for seed propagation, the plant is placed in bright light, the leaves turn pale, but the plant blooms more luxuriantly. Propagates well by stem or leaf cuttings. Needs annual replanting into a larger pot, does not tolerate waterlogging and drying out, high or very low temperatures.

One of the most famous hybrids of Bauer's Begonia is "Cleopatra" - leaves are maple-shaped, slightly beveled, young leaves in bloom are burgundy-brown with green spots, which then expand and the leaf almost completely turns green. There is also a curly form of this variety, Cleopatra Crispa.

Another popular variety of Begonia Bauer is the so-called “Black Begonia” or “Spalding” - the leaves are obliquely heart-shaped, elongated, pointed, medium-sized on thin petioles, with dark green wide stripes along the central veins. In bright light, the leaves gradually turn green and darken, gradually acquiring an almost black color.

MASON'S BEGONIA OR IRON CROSS (Begonia masoniana):

This type of Begonia is distinguished by heart-shaped, curved, pointed, medium-sized leaves with a very rough and bumpy texture, as well as a contrasting dark brown pattern in the form of a cross on a bright green emerald background of the leaf blade. The flowers are not of decorative interest - small, cream-colored on long peduncles, collected in a loose inflorescence. The bush is compact with a very hairy, recumbent thick fleshy stem. Prefers diffused, but still sufficient light, an even, fairly cool temperature of no more than +18 - 22 degrees, slightly acidic soil, moderate moisture without flooding or drying out. Does not tolerate watering on leaves. Frequent replanting is advisable - preferably once a year in the spring, to avoid strong stretching of the stem and exposure. At the same time, she is cut for the same purpose. Propagated by stem cuttings and leaves.

BEGONIA COLLAR, OR CUFF, OR CUFF, OR MANICATA (Begonia manicata):

This species is characterized by large light green leaves on long hairy petioles and a thick, lodging stem. On the back side of the leaf, across the protruding central veins and along the entire length of the petiole, there are very interesting hairy formations in the form of burgundy cuffs or, as it were, overhanging tunic sleeves, which is where the name of this species comes from. The shoots on the stem are whitish in color. The height of the plant reaches half a meter or more. The flowers are small, light pink, collected in a loose large inflorescence on a very long peduncle. There can be several flower stalks, and they form a whole bouquet, which is considered quite decorative by many gardeners. Flowering occurs in winter.

Since other species of Begonia have characteristic outgrowths, they are often confused, for example, with Hogweed, but the latter has maple-shaped leaves, while the collared one has rounded, obliquely heart-shaped leaves.

There are several popular hybrids of Begonia Manicata: hybrid "Freddie" - leaves with a golden hue, inherited from Begonia manicata 'Aureo Maculata' and rounded heart-shaped leaves from Begonia barkeri, characterized by wide sizes up to one and a half meters, and heights up to 50-60 cm. Blooms profusely and for a long time several times a year (with sufficient nutrition and care). Another very beautiful hybrid of recent years is “Crispa” - with a very curly edge of a rounded leaf.

BEGONIA CORAL OR CORALLINE (Begonia x corallina):

It is an artificially created hybrid and is not found in nature. It is distinguished by its tall growth, bush-like shape, very large elongated leaves and bright crimson flowers in large drooping inflorescences. Flowering is quite long and repeated.

A hybrid of Richards' Begonia and Coral Begonia is sold as the Coral Begonia cultivar 'Lucerna' . A tall bushy perennial plant with very large, elongated, obliquely heart-shaped leaves, bright green with silver spots, with a slightly serrated edge, the lower part of the leaf has a reddish tint. The flowers are scarlet or crimson, quite large, collected in large lush inflorescences, and are of decorative interest. To obtain a more compact and bushy form, it needs pinching to achieve the optimal height. This also achieves a faster onset of flowering.

Begonia heracleifolia:

It is distinguished by slightly curved maple-shaped or palm-shaped leaves of a dark green color on long red petioles. On the leaf blade along the central veins there are light green broad strokes. The design gives the impression of a star or a palm. When in bloom the leaf is redder, then turns green. The stem is thick, lodging, pubescent. The flowers are quite large pink, collected in a large and lush inflorescence on a long peduncle.

BEGONIA HYBRIDS (Begonia hybrida):

One of the most luxurious Begonias of recent years. The most popular: Hybrid of Royal Begonia 'Filigree' (Begonia rex) and Luxurious Begonia (Begonia luxurians) - 'Benitochiba' with large palmate silver-pink leaves curved to one side and dark green central veins. Young leaves are more crimson, then lighten, older leaves are pure silver. The bush is very compact.

Hybrid Begonia rex - "Meisterstuck" - leaves are oval-curved, silver-purple, the central veins of young leaves are at first very dark and clear, almost black, then they turn green, lighten and almost disappear. The lilac tint of the veins remains on the edge of the leaf. The bush is low and very compact.

A very elegant hybrid of Begonia Rex - “Pink Champagne”, or “Pink Champagne”, or “Pink Champagne” (Pink Champagne) - this hybrid has young leaves that are more crimson, with age, a wide silver-green stripe. The bush is very compact, the leaves are large.

The famous hybrid Begonia Rex - "Pearl de Paris" or "Pearl of Paris" (Pearl de Paris) - a variety with very silvery pearl-colored leaves and a thin crimson wavy border.

Hybrid "Gryphon" (Gryphon) - maple-shaped leaves with deep cuts, silver-cream with dark green central veins. The bush is low, up to 40 cm high, very dense.

Growing - care at home:

Location:

Decorative deciduous Begonias love diffused but sufficient light. Based on this, it is advisable to place pots with Begonias on eastern or western windows. If you have only southern ones, then the plant is placed away from the window on stands or shading is done using translucent nylon curtains, and if only northern ones, then in winter it is necessary to additionally illuminate them with fluorescent lamps. In general, begonia can tolerate partial shade, but in insufficient light the plant becomes very elongated, especially tall varieties. In the bright sun, the leaves of some hybrids become discolored or lose their attractive pattern, while others, on the contrary, become very dark or green, which can also lead to a loss of decorativeness. But if you want to achieve flowering, then brighter sun will contribute to this.

Deciduous begonias do not like to be moved from place to place, especially when buds are setting, but slight gradual turns around their axis are desirable for more uniform growth in all directions.

Temperature:

Although Begonia cannot be called a sissy, it is still advisable to maintain the temperature within reasonable limits from +15 -18 degrees to +22-25, without sudden fluctuations and strong ventilation with cold air. It is not advisable to place plants close to central heating radiators, and if this is not possible, then somehow cover the radiator from above, for example, with a blanket, so that the air flows only into the room.

In summer, plants are placed away from windows, taken out to a glazed and shaded balcony if it is cooler there. Spray the air around the plants.

“Begonia Vorotnichkovaya outgrowths” PHOTO: www.ourflo.ru

“Collar begonia” PHOTO: www.plantshome.com.ua

Humidity:

Moderate humidity is desirable for Begonias. High humidity and very dry air are equally unsuitable for plants. With high humidity, fungal diseases and rot begin, and with dry humidity, spider mites and drying of the tips of the leaves with loss of decorativeness.

Spraying to increase humidity cannot be carried out on the leaves; all drops that fall on the leaves will leave either unsightly stains or even brown spots. Only spray the air around the plants from the pollinator with small droplets. When turning on the central heating, it is advisable to place bowls of water nearby, or place a pot with a plant on a wide tray with expanded clay and fill it with water - the water will evaporate around the plant and maintain sufficient humidity.

Watering:

Watering is carried out either with tap water that has been standing for several days, or with cooled boiled water. Watering is carried out only when the top layer of soil dries. If you cannot determine how much water the plant needs, first water it in the tray of the pot, and after a couple of hours, drain the remaining water - the plant itself will take as much as it needs. In summer, Begonias are watered more often, immediately after the top layer has dried, and in winter - less often, waiting until the soil layer dries to a depth of at least 1 cm, i.e. Before watering, always check with your finger how dry it is.

In general, as practice shows, it is better to underwater indoor Begonia than to overwater it.

Feeding:

Along with watering, mineral and organic fertilizing is also carried out - no more than once every 2 weeks in spring and summer. If the soil is quite fresh, then mineral fertilizing is carried out no earlier than a month after planting. The easiest way is to use special fertilizers “For Begonias”; they will slightly acidify the soil and fertilize it. If there are no special ones, you can use “For Conifers”, “For Azaleas and Rhododendrons”, “Universal” or “For Deciduous Deciduous Plants”. In winter, plants are fertilized once a month.

The soil:

For decorative deciduous Begonias, very loose, light, fertile, slightly acidic or close to neutral soil is desirable. The easiest way is to buy ready-made soils from well-known companies, but if there are none or you don’t trust them, then you can create a soil mixture yourself. To do this, take well-rotted leaf compost or forest soil, steam it in the oven, microwave, or pour boiling water over it and dry it. Non-trapping peat, washed coarse river sand, vermiculite, perlite, and small foam chips are added to the mixture.

Planting and transplanting:

All plantings and transplants are carried out in the spring. To plant Begonias, use wide and shallow plastic pots. Clay pots are good for everyone, except for one thing - the roots of the plant grow into the rough walls and are damaged the next time they are replanted. At the bottom of pots of any type we place a sufficient amount of expanded clay or other drainage (clay shards, washed pebbles, etc.). Add a small layer of soil, install the plant, cover it with the remaining soil and squeeze the roots well, spill it, and drain the excess water after a few hours.

Plants are replanted every year in the spring, transplanting them into an increasingly wider pot. But since the lifespan of one plant is not so long - 3-4 years, a very overgrown plant is replanted and at the same time rejuvenating pruning.

Trimming:

Conducted in the spring before or together with transplantation, or immediately after, as is more convenient. In highly elongated adult plants, all stems are cut off, leaving stumps up to 5 cm high above the edge of the pot. Cuttings and leaves are rooted if necessary.

Reproduction:

Begonias reproduce well. The easiest way is to root cuttings in water. To do this, cut a cutting at least 5 cm long from a plant you like, preferably in the spring, but you can, in principle, at any time, and place it in a glass of boiled water. Another method - rooting with a leaf or part of a leaf blade is carried out if it is impossible to cut the cuttings or if it is necessary to obtain a larger number of seedlings. To do this, cut off a leaf with a petiole of at least 5 cm and also root it in water. But you can root a leaf with a petiole in very loose soil, covering the pot with a transparent bag or jar. Leaf blades are rooted in parts only in the soil. To do this, you need to cut the leaf blade so that the central vein remains at the base of each part. At this point, the piece is immersed in a very loose soil mixture and the soil is carefully pressed around, spilled, and covered with a bag or jar. All cuttings and pieces are ventilated every day before rooting and are not allowed to dry out or become waterlogged. You can dip the cuttings in Kornevin or other rooting agents before rooting.

Cuttings in a glass are planted after a fairly good root system has appeared. It is advisable to first plant them in small and transparent containers, for example, plastic cups, so that the developing root system is visible. As soon as the roots reach the side surface and become visible, the plant can be transplanted into a larger pot. Small seedlings are fertilized along with watering once every 2 weeks at a dilution of 1:4 from the norm.

Reproduction of deciduous Begonias by seeds:

The process of propagation by seeds of deciduous Begonias is quite labor-intensive, although interesting. It must be remembered that complete repetition of maternal qualities in seedlings is possible only in species plants that are practically not grown now. But modern hybrids either do not set seeds, or the seedlings produce split qualities and are not similar to their parents. But if breeding work interests you, then you can try growing a new variety. The collected seeds are very small, so they are sown on the surface of very loose, preferably sifted, already damp soil and lightly pressed down with their hands. Cover the top with glass or a transparent bag. Every day they ventilate, turn the glass over and turn the bag inside out so that drops do not drip onto the seedlings. Keep at a temperature of +20-25 degrees. Periodically spray with a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate to prevent rotting. As soon as the seedlings have a pair of true leaves, they begin to accustom them to the dry air of the apartment, first leaving the edge of the glass moved and the bag slightly open on the side. When the second pair of leaves appears, they are transplanted into small cups and for now also under the bags, as soon as the plant gives another couple of leaves, you can begin to open the bags slightly. This process is lengthy, the result is unknown, but maybe that’s what makes it attractive.

Begonia diseases:

Among the most common are fungal infections: gray rot and spots can quickly destroy a plant. The most important method of prevention is proper agricultural technology (compliance with temperature and watering regimes). But if the disease does occur, then the plant is treated with antifungal drugs (Fungicides) such as “Skor” or “Fitoverm”. If rot appears on the leaves, it is advisable to remove them and spray the entire plant with a fungicide from a very fine spray bottle so that as few spots as possible remain.

Why Begonia doesn't bloom:

Decorative deciduous Begonias, as a rule, do not bloom decoratively enough, so this question is not raised. But there are some species whose blooms are quite beautiful and welcome. If in this case the plant does not bloom, it is fed with a complete mineral fertilizer with the obligatory content of potassium and phosphorus, and also dried a little, but not too much - just so that the top layer dries completely to a depth of 2 cm. As a rule, this serves in nature as a signal to the plant, that it's time to bloom.

Why do Begonia leaves turn yellow?

The reasons for yellowing of leaves can be diametrically opposite: prolonged waterlogging and prolonged drying out. Both of these cannot be allowed. If these reasons could not provoke yellowing, then perhaps your plant lacks nutrients, namely nitrogen. The plant must be fed with regular watering in full dose.

The appearance of brown spots along the edges of the leaves most likely indicates dry indoor air, but it may also indicate a lack of nutrients, such as phosphorus.

Popular types of begonia

Begonia is one of the most popular and widespread plants that thrive indoors. It is often found not only in city apartments and private houses, but also in educational institutions, clinics and other similar organizations. Begonia fits perfectly into different ensembles, effectively decorating even the most boring and austere interior. Many gardeners are engaged in growing this charming plant. Today we will take a closer look at what types of it exist and what characteristics they differ from.

Peculiarities

Begonia is one of the most common plants that is difficult to confuse with other similar species. Many gardeners are engaged in its cultivation, since begonia itself is unpretentious and does not require complex care - there is no need to spend a lot of time and effort on it.

This beautiful and unpretentious plant can be either annual or perennial. Often the bushes reach a height of more than 2 m. The flowers themselves most often have modest sizes and are not striking. If we are talking about a special root begonia, then, on the contrary, it does not become too large - usually its height does not exceed 20 cm.

Many feng shui fans are confident that begonia, when used at home, destroys negative energy and helps smooth out conflict situations. In addition, it is believed that this common plant cleanses the biofield of households living in the house where it grows. A person’s self-confidence increases noticeably if he grows begonia.

Description of the plant

Royal begonia, also known as Begonia Rex, is a hybrid variety of the Elatior group, bred by crossing Socotrans and tuberous begonias. Perhaps this is the most beautiful and original flower in the world, deservedly called royal. Almost all of its varieties have asymmetrical carved leaves ranging from bronze-chocolate, almost black, to cherry-red with a luxurious silvery sheen.

Royal Begonia Rex

Due to the heart-shaped base and sharp edge of the leaves, the royal begonia is also called “Napoleon’s Ear”, “Elephant Ears”. The surface of the leaf blade is velvety, slightly pimply, covered with short villi. The back side is covered with red veins.

By crossing Rex begonia with other varieties, unusual hybrids with fringed or spiral-shaped foliage were formed.

A rather large, dense creeping rhizome protrudes above the surface of the ground. After the lower leaf plates dry out, marks remain on the rhizome.

In nature, the herbaceous perennial grows in the tropical forests and mountains of Eastern India. We grow it exclusively at home. In order for an exotic beauty to fully develop, she needs to be provided with conditions as close as possible to the humid climate of her historical homeland.

Flowering is sparse, flowers are small and not particularly attractive. They are not the main decoration of the plant, since they are significantly less decorative than the leaves.

Royal begonia blooming

It is impossible to convey all the charm and versatility of Rex begonia from a photo. In fact, the tropical plant is much more beautiful.

Helpful information! The fleecy leaves of the royal begonia purify the indoor air from germs and dust. Therefore, the plant needs regular wet cleaning, at least 2 times a month. Gently wipe each leaf with a damp flannel cloth. Do not forget about the fragility of the tropical guest and that it can break from any careless movement.

Begonia varieties

Begonia is one of the most colorful plants and will certainly appeal to any gardener. Experts identify more than 1,500 varieties of begonia, which differ in flower color, shape and size characteristics. The largest varieties can grow up to 300 cm, and miniature begonia reaches a height of no more than 5 cm. The homeland of the exotic plant is Africa and South America. The begonia was named in honor of the Governor of Haiti M. Begon.

Begonia can be found not only in the form of a herbaceous plant, but also in the form of a subshrub and shrub. Hybrids have become the most popular among flower growers - decorative-flowering and decorative-deciduous types of plants. Begonia, whose varied varieties are suitable not only for experienced flower growers, but also for inexperienced summer residents who want to decorate their plot.

How to properly care for begonia at home

When you want to add coziness to your home atmosphere, and add liveliness and brightness to the interior, neither paintings, nor figurines, nor even designer furniture of the boldest colors will help - buy an indoor flower, for example, a begonia. Caring for begonias at home will not cause serious difficulties, and the room will immediately come to life.

Whatever type of this flower is chosen, it will captivate the hostess with a scattering of bright flowers or leaves, fancifully painted by nature with intricate patterns and colors of various shades. In order for such beauty to live and bloom in the house, it is worth following some rules regarding the care of this plant. Proper planting in a permanent pot is also important.

Green beauty and its types

How to choose begonia for your home? According to the call of the heart and appearance, especially since there are many varieties of this plant. The genus includes a huge number of species - more than 1000.

Depending on the type, the plant can be a small bush or extend 2-3 meters. Therefore, begonias can often be seen not only at home, but also in garden compositions, in the design of flower beds or balconies.

For growing in pots at home, they usually choose specimens of medium and small sizes, blooming luxuriantly or having unusually brightly colored leaves.

Decorative deciduous begonia

To decorate a home, as a rule, choose one of two types of begonia:

  • decorative deciduous;
  • decorative blooming.

From the name it becomes clear that decorative deciduous species amaze with the variety of colors on leaves of unusual shape. Prominent examples are Mason's begonia, Royal and Imperial begonias.

The asymmetrical, carved leaves of the Royal Begonia combine colors of various shades.

For such an unusual appearance, in former times the plant was called “Napoleon’s Ear” due to its similarity to the shape and color of the ears of the soldiers of the retreating French army, which they froze in the harsh Russian weather conditions.

Royal begonia

Mason begonia leaves look more laconic compared to Royal or Imperial begonias. Its leaf plate is painted bright green, over which a black pattern is “applied.”

The unusual appearance of Mason begonia leaves makes not only experienced flower growers, who certainly want to add this plant to their collection, fall in love with them, but also people who have a sense of style and purchase this or that flower for aesthetic reasons.

Mason's begonia will fit perfectly into a modern interior, which is often characterized by laconicism and restraint in details.

Begonia Mason

Those who love a variety of colors should pay attention to the decorative flowering species of this plant, examples of which are ampelous and ever-flowering begonias. Ever-flowering begonia can be grown both in open ground and at home. Outdoors, ever-blooming begonia is often used in the design of rocky slides due to the specific nature of its creeping growth.

Begonia everblooming

Ampel begonia is distinguished by hanging lush flowers, for which it received its name, which comes from the German word “ampel” - a vase for hanging flowers. Due to the fact that the plant is monoecious, the flowers on it are male and female: large, lush and miniature. Moreover, when flowering, ampelous begonia is covered with flowers of two different colors.

General requirements and care features

Despite the fact that begonia is considered an unpretentious indoor plant that even the most novice gardener can grow, it is necessary to know certain rules for caring for it. The basic rules, the observance of which will provide the flower with decent maintenance, are valid for all types of this indoor plant grown at home.

Begonia tuberous

So, let’s consider the basic questions, the answers to which must be known to the person in whose house the “green beauty” has settled:

  • illumination;
  • location;
  • watering;
  • temperature;
  • feeding;
  • humidity.

Advice: if it is difficult to remember specific conditions of care, it is enough to remember the following. This flower of any type - be it ampelous or Mason's begonia - needs "average" conditions: not hot, but not cold, not excessively humid (speaking of the soil), but not dry, light, but not bright, etc. .

Decorative deciduous and decorative flowering species of begonias love light. But this does not mean that they can withstand bright sunlight. Therefore, the plant must be hidden from direct sun and, if necessary, shaded.

Based on the level of recommended illumination, the location for the pot with this flower should be chosen on the eastern windows.

For deciduous species, for example, Mason's begonia, window sills facing southwest are also suitable, and for flowering ones - to the southeast.

How much to water and how to water begonia depends on the time of year, but in general it follows the rule of the “golden mean”, because this indoor flower does not like overwatering and drying out.

As soon as the soil has dried to a depth of 1 finger, you need to water the plant. Settled water at room temperature is suitable for this.

In winter, for plants that go into a dormant state (this is not typical for a house plant - ever-flowering begonia), the frequency of watering is significantly reduced.

Begonia Snail (Escargo)

The temperature recommended for normal life of this plant of the begonia family at home varies from 19°C to 23°C. This is an average normal room temperature, so no special effort is needed to maintain it.

“Blooming beauty” loves fresh air, but some of its species cannot tolerate drafts, so ventilation should be done carefully. Plants need to be fed with various fertilizers depending on the type, time of year, stage of development, etc.

However, they must be diluted in a slightly lower concentration than indicated in the instructions.

Begonia fertilizer

Begonia loves moist air and needs it vitally, this is especially important for it in winter - during the dormant period, when watering is reduced. But it is important to remember that you cannot spray them.

When sprayed, dark marks appear on the beautiful leaves of Mason's begonia and other deciduous plants, which negatively affect the health of the flower and its appearance.

To keep the humidity at the optimal level (about 60%), you can use one of the options below:

  • humidifier;
  • spraying air from a spray bottle without getting on the leaves;
  • placing saucers with water near a pot of begonia.

To control the temperature and humidity of the plant’s environment, it is convenient to use a device that combines a thermometer and a hygrometer.

Adapting a store flower to your home

If the begonia was purchased or given as a gift, it needs to be moved from the store pot to a permanent one over time. Planting is not carried out immediately, but when the flower gets used to the microclimate of the room in which it will “live”.

To make the habituation faster, you need to choose a permanent place for the begonia that meets the requirements described above, and not move the pot from place to place.

When landing is planned, you should have on hand:

  • new flower pot;
  • special soil;
  • drainage (for example, expanded clay).

Landing is carried out as follows:

  1. Fill the bottom of the new pot with drainage.
  2. Place about 1.5 cm of soil on top of the drainage.
  3. Carefully remove the flower from the soft store pot by kneading it or making a cut on the side.
  4. Place the begonia in a new pot and cover with soil.
  5. After relocating the begonia, monitor its condition especially carefully: shade it, follow the watering rules and provide the required level of humidity (60%).

People say that begonia brings happiness and joy to the house and attracts love. Whether this is true or not - everyone decides for himself. But the fact that a blooming beauty creates a wonderful mood and charges you with positivity is true, without a doubt!

Top 10 popular varieties

The most popular varieties include:

  • The Party Dress variety is a tuberous variety that has a spectacular dazzling fiery palette. The inflorescences of the variety are quite large and terry. The color has a harmonious transition. The dense inflorescences of the hybrid consist of flowers, the edges of which are endowed with ruffled outlines. The outer part of the petals is wide. Closer to the center the petals narrow. Their cruciform structure becomes clearer. The apricot-orange hue of the flowers looks very rich. The extreme part of the petal is painted with a thin reddish stripe, which is slightly blurred. The resulting contrast conveys the richness and warmth of the shade.
  • Variety Picotee Yellow-Red. The main difference between this plant variety is its two-color color. Picotee Yellow-Red, despite its compact size, has lush flowering. The massiveness and density of the variety, whose height rarely exceeds 35 cm, is achieved thanks to shortened peduncles. The diameter of the flowers is within 8-9 cm. Thick double flowers look very elegant and become a real decoration of the yard. Picotee Yellow-Red petals look very unusual due to their apricot-melon shades with dark red edges. Densely arranged flowers merge into one motley spot. The greenery of the plant is painted in bright, cool tones, making the flowers look as impressive as possible.
  • Variety Camelia. Tuberous is distinguished by its unique shape of petals and dense double flowers that resemble camellia. The height of the bush reaches 28-30 cm. Small foliage emphasizes the large size of the flowers, the diameter of which is in the range of 9-12 cm. The edges of the begonia are painted in white shades. Uneven spots fade into rich, dark pink bases. This watercolor painting of the classic flower shape looks very attractive.

Variety Party Dress

  • The Marmorata variety vaguely resembles camellia, but differs from it in color. The red edges of the petals blend into a snow-white base in uneven strokes. Due to the variety of flowers, Marmorata is often compared to carnations, which are characterized by similar patterns. The flowering is lush. Marmorata seed can be purchased at any specialty store.
  • Variety Samba is a double, large-flowered species that is distinguished by ruffled edges of the petals and bright shades of flowers, which can be orange, white, soft pink, or cream, hot pink, yellow. The diameter of the flowers often reaches 9-10 cm. Densely branching bushes look neat. Due to the shortened peduncles, there is a feeling that the flowers are sitting on the foliage.
  • Alcor F1 is a hybrid ampelous medicinal begonia that perfectly purifies the air. Alcor reaches a height of 40-45 cm. The foliage of the plant is dense, but the abundance of flowers that bloom on the bush literally covers all the greenery and creates a bright spot. Alcor flowers reach a diameter of 8 cm. Their elegance and asymmetry attract gardeners. The upper outer petals are colored candy red. Bright pink streaks are clearly visible on the lower outer white petals. At the center of the flowers, the petals are gracefully colored in delicate shades of pink and orange.
  • Olomouc This hybrid is an ever-blooming hybrid. The main property of the plant is to reduce the content of staphylococcus in the air. The height of the bush barely reaches 20 cm, the diameter of the white flowers is between 2-3 cm. The dazzling bright foliage and compactness of the dense bush with ideal shapes make Olomouc a popular variety. The flowers of the plant appear artificial from a distance. The round petals bend in such a way that they resemble the brim of a hat. The purity of the lines surprises no less than the bright radiance of the colors of the flowers. The lush ball, which is formed by orange stamens in the center, looks very impressive. Popular varieties and hybrids of royal begonia

Among the variety of varieties and hybrids of royal begonia, you can get confused. Moreover, each individual variety is unique in its own way. We present to your attention the most interesting plants suitable for growing indoors:

Mini Mary Christmas

Begonia "Mini Merry Christmas" (B. Mini Merry Christmas) is the most variegated variety of royal begonia, growing up to 30 cm in length. From the brown center of the leaf blade, bright green spills out, turning into a wide red-crimson border. The entire surface is strewn with bright pearlescent specks. The top of the leaf is velvety, the back is cut with large veins.

Begonia mini merry christmas

Griffon

The tallest and longest lasting royal begonia (B. Griffon) is often used in landscape design. In this case, the shrub is grown as an annual. In the home flower garden, it is a perennial with a height of up to 41 cm. Large white-green leaves with dark veins calmly tolerate dry air (which cannot be said about the parent of the hybrid).

Royal begonia griffon

Escargot

Because of the bizarre shape of its leaves, the Escargot begonia (B. Escargot) is called the “royal snail.” A rather wide bush, 30 cm high, consists of large matte fleecy leaves, twisted at the base into a double spiral. A curved silver stripe runs through the dark olive base of each leaf, separating the center from the edge.

Begonia cultivation and care

Exquisite begonia is an absolutely unpretentious plant. Flowers growing in their natural environment can adapt to a variety of conditions. Flowers feel most comfortable in a moderately shaded area with low humidity and acceptable temperature.

Note! In the middle zone, the flower of the Begoniaceae family is grown indoors. However, you can try growing tuberous plants in open ground.

It is best to plant the plant in the garden in early June. During this period, the threat of frost has passed. For the flower, you need to choose a shaded place or an area with diffused sunlight.

The plant is propagated by cuttings.

Landing rules

Before planting a plant, it is important to carefully read the growing rules:

  • Before seedlings are planted in open ground, they should be hardened off - the main condition that will help young bushes grow stronger. To do this, you will need to place them for 7 days in a well-lit room, the temperature in which is within 22-26 °C during the daytime, 12-15 °C during the dark.
  • For growing begonias, a soil mixture containing leaf soil, peat, sand and humus is suitable. The components must be connected in a ratio of 1:0.5:0.5:0.5.
  • After preparing the soil, planting takes place. A drainage mixture consisting of fine crushed stone, expanded clay or coarse sand is poured onto the surface of the bottom of the hole. Then the hole is filled with a mixture of peat and compost. If desired, this mixture can be replaced with potassium-phosphorus fertilizer.
  • After planting the seedling, it must be watered abundantly and the soil around the trunk should be covered with wood ash. To avoid soil freezing at night, you can cover the ground with agrofibre or film material.

Lighting

Begonia needs soft lighting in the morning and evening. The large-leaved plant species, painted in white, silver and red tones, is very demanding of such lighting. In the cold season, it is worth placing flower pots on the south side. During the hot season, it is worth moving the pots to a shaded place so that the delicate foliage does not burn.

If plants lack natural light, you can periodically turn on fluorescent phyto-lamps. Everblooming and deciduous flower species require 12 hours of daylight.

Temperature

The optimal temperature for growing begonia is within 18-19 °C in the summer and 11-14 °C in the cold season.

Important! At temperatures below +4°C, the bushes of the plant die, losing not only flowers, but also foliage. However, it is unacceptable to allow very high air temperatures, at which the flowers dry out.

Humidity

According to the observations of experts, the best development of indoor flowers of the Begoniaceae family is observed at air humidity in the range of 50-55%. It is unacceptable to place pots with plants in close proximity to heating appliances, gas stoves or convectors. Combustion products emitted by equipment have a detrimental effect on flowers.

It is advisable to place an automatic humidifier near the pot with begonia. If this is not possible, you can systematically spray water near the plant, preventing the log from getting on the foliage. Moisturizing procedures should be carried out in the morning and evening hours.

Begonia everblooming Bada bing

Watering

A large number of plant varieties can easily withstand short-term dry periods. Excessive soil moisture, on the contrary, can lead to diseases and death of the bush. The tuberous type of bush should be moistened when the substrate dries to half its depth. Branched fibrous roots will require more liquid. For irrigation, you can use water that has settled or been filtered. The water temperature should be room temperature.

Fertilizers and fertilizing

Begonia needs systematic vitamin and mineral feeding. It is advisable to fertilize every 14 days from the beginning of spring to mid-autumn. In winter, flowers remain dormant.

In a specialized store you can find a huge number of preparations that are produced for feeding begonias. They are made on the basis of a water-soluble complex of useful elements, which enable the bushes to maintain health during the active growth phase and during the flowering period.

Decorative flowering begonias

This group includes large-flowered varieties of flowers from the Begoniaceae family. The leaves of these plants are narrow, small, and elongated. Their lower part is pubescent. The flowers are large (up to 30 cm in diameter), bright, double or simple. The buds can grow individually or be collected in clusters.

Representatives of this group bloom from summer to autumn (with proper care - from spring). In winter, plants shed their leaves and enter a dormant phase. Varieties of begonia that are found in this group: Ampelous, Elatior, Ever-blooming, Slender, Tuberous, Gloire de Lorraine, Fuchsia.

Pests and diseases

By following the basic rules for caring for flowers, you can avoid most of the problems that often arise with inexperienced flower growers. If begonias are not maintained correctly, insects may appear on the plants or the bush may become diseased. Very often you can find in begonia:

  • dry foliage, which occurs against the background of overdrying;
  • the appearance of transparent spots on the foliage is a sign of sunburn;
  • falling off of greenery due to hypothermia;
  • rotting of the root system due to stagnation of water;
  • A decrease in the size of greenery and a decrease in the number of flowers is a consequence of a lack of minerals.

Powdery-type spots on foliage most often appear due to powdery mildew or gray mold. Diseases begin to develop against the background of a lack of light or when the level of air humidity increases. Diseases can be controlled by spraying with fungicides that contain benomyl.

Note! The most dangerous thing for flowers of the Begoniaceae family is the appearance of yellow rings on the green mass. They are formed against the background of tomato spot and cucumber mosaic viruses. Unfortunately, no drug can effectively deal with yellow rings. The affected plant must be destroyed.

You will have to get rid of the bushes even in cases where nematodes (worms whose size is in the range of 0.5-1 mm) appear in the root system and on the foliage of plants. The presence of worms can be recognized by the deformation of surfaces, the appearance of a swollen spot or growth.

In cases where begonia is not properly cared for, it can become infected with the following pests:

  • scale insect;
  • thrips;
  • red spider mite;
  • aphids.

In order to cope with insects, you will need to use insecticides. Treatment of a houseplant must be carried out near an open window to prevent air poisoning with chemical elements. If desired, you can spray the plant with a soap solution (250 g of laundry soap is required for 10 liters of water). Onion and garlic infusions and tobacco can also save home bushes from pests. For maximum effectiveness of treatment, the bushes will need to provide the correct climate in which pests cannot exist.

Growing begonias is an interesting and very exciting process. By caring for the bushes, you can soon enjoy the lush flowering of the plant.

Do royal begonias require royal care?

This ornamental perennial plant is characterized by diverse forms of foliage, which look very beautiful in the home interior. Royal begonia is very unpretentious, caring for it is quite simple.

Description

The plant is native to Southeast Asia. In London, it attracted attention at an auction of Asian orchids in 1856, and after 3 years three new forms of royal begonia were developed. Experts began to actively engage in the selection of new varieties and forms of plants.

The most popular varieties:

  • Dollar Down - low bushes with pointed red leaves and a black border; Begonia regal Dollar Down
  • Escargot (Snail) - bush height up to 30 cm, leaf apparatus is slightly corrugated, at the petiole it twists into a spiral. The leaves are dark olive in color with a silver stripe; Begonia royal Escargot (Snail)
  • Gryphon (Gryphon) is a bush of medium height, the leaf blades are large, two-colored (dark green and pearlescent pink), their edges are beautifully carved. Begonia royal Gryphon (Griffin)

Preparations containing this plant activate blood circulation and have anti-allergenic, wound-healing and phytoncidal properties. Royal begonia transforms negative energy into positive energy, organizes and harmonizes it, and activates human activity.

How to care for royal begonia at home?

The soil substrate must have a slightly acidic reaction. The place where the flowerpot will be placed should be well lit with diffused light. It is necessary to water the plant abundantly, but do not allow stagnation of moisture. You also need to monitor air humidity.

The bush grows and develops well at temperatures of +16...+24°C.

The plant is planted at 4 weeks (when grown from seeds). The pot must be spacious, have drainage holes and a tray.

The bush needs to be replanted every 3-4 years. It is better to do this in the spring, since at this time the plant adapts best. For transplantation, select a pot with a larger diameter than the previous one, but not very deep.

In order to form the correct shape, it is necessary to pinch the bush. Early in the spring, when new shoots begin to grow, their tops are pinched (distance from the top of the shoot is 1 cm).

If the plant is affected by the disease, you need to remove the affected parts with a sharp, disinfected knife. The cut areas must be sprinkled with activated carbon powder.

In winter, royal begonia should be placed in a room with a temperature no higher than 15.5°C. You should be careful about watering - do not overfill or underwater.

Diseases and pests: treatment methods

The plant is very sensitive to changes in living conditions and inappropriate care. When the defenses of royal begonia weaken, it can be damaged by pathogenic microorganisms that cause diseases:

  • gray rot - brown spots appear on the leaf blades, then they are covered with a gray coating. Such leaves need to be removed and the bush treated with a fungicide solution;
  • powdery mildew - leaf blades are coated with a white coating. Remove the affected leaves and treat the bush with a fungicide solution.

Also, a weakened plant can be damaged by insect pests:

  • spider mite is a very small insect (0.5 mm), feeds on cell sap, which leads to depletion of the bush. Royal begonia is treated with a soap solution or insecticide solution;
  • aphids - feed on cell sap. The bush is treated with tobacco infusion.

How to propagate royal begonia?

You can propagate the plant:

  • leaf - a healthy and large leaf blade is divided into parts above the bifurcation of the main veins (every 1.5 cm). Leaf cuttings are placed in a moistened soil substrate and covered with film. The film is lifted daily for ventilation. After 30 days, roots form, and after another month, the first leaves;
  • stem cuttings - shoots about 15 cm long with 3 leaves are cut, treated with a growth stimulator, planted deep in a moist soil substrate, covered with a glass container and placed in a warm place. Next, the substrate is ventilated daily and, if necessary, moistened. After a month, the root system is formed;
  • seeds - in winter, surface sowing is carried out in a prepared substrate. Then the seeds are sprayed with water from a spray bottle and covered with glass, which is then periodically lifted for ventilation. When sprouts appear, the plants are transferred to a cool, well-lit room (to prevent stretching). After the first pair of leaves appears, the plants are transplanted into separate diving glasses filled with soil substrate. Royal begonia is transplanted into flowerpots in the phase of 5-6 leaves.

The advantages of this propagation method are the preservation of varietal characteristics and qualities of the mother plant.

  • children - when replanting, young plants are separated along with the root system and planted in flowerpots filled with substrate;
  • by dividing the rhizome - a bush that is at least 5 years old is removed from the flowerpot, the roots are washed, and divided into parts (each must have a bud or shoot). Plant in wide flowerpots, water and place in a bright, warm room.

Use in landscape design

To create a welcoming environment, it is best to place the flowerpot in the living room. The plant will attract attention and delight with its appearance all year round. It is very good to use a flowerpot with royal begonia when creating a winter garden. If you place a pot with a plant outdoors in the garden, then only in partial shade.

This regal bush has a lot of fans, because its elaborate, interestingly colored leaves surpass many flowers in beauty. For many people, royal begonia is a favorite plant to grow at home.

Begonia Tiger (Bauer)

A striking representative of the decorative deciduous species of begonias is tiger begonia.
This species, among its relatives, stands out for its unusual leaf color: bright green, with brown spots and patterned edges, they are very pleasing to the eye, and the bush itself, with its compact and neat appearance, lifts the mood.

Such an original pattern and unusual shape can enliven any environment, and by memorizing a few rules for caring for tiger begonia at home, even an inexperienced gardener can grow this miracle.

Begonia tuberous

Tuberous begonia
Tuberous varieties are grown at home and in open ground. Based on the size of the buds, they are divided into subspecies: large-flowered (7–20 cm), medium-flowered (up to 7 cm), small-flowered (4–7 cm) and ampelous (2–4 cm). In terms of structure, the inflorescences are simple and double, and in color - white, yellow, pink, red or mixed.

The shoots are fleshy, branching, 35–50 cm long. The leaves are asymmetrical, juicy, bright green. The root system is fleshy tubers with a large number of small roots. To grow plants of this group, hanging pots and pots with high legs are used. According to their growth form, tuberous begonias are divided into erect and ampelous (hanging).

Erect

The stems of plants of this species grow upward. The shoots are fleshy, dense, juicy. Their length is from 10 to 40 cm. Flowers with erect trunks can be grown both at home in containers and in flower beds

Picoti Harlequin

Botanical description and photo

Tiger begonia is a perennial plant. It is quite small in size (rarely exceeds 25-30 cm), but its splendor can be envied: begonia produces so many leaves (of course, with good care) that it creates the effect of an unusual green pillow.

The leaves are mostly small, 3-4 centimeters wide , but sometimes larger species are also found.
The patterns on them always include contrasting elements: spots of different sizes, stripes alternating one after another, symmetrical veins running from the center to the edges. The shape is ovoid or reminiscent of oak leaves. The surface is covered with tiny hairs, soft and creating a fluff effect. The flowers are small, white, and resemble butterflies in appearance, perched in the thick green foliage. The buds are collected in inflorescences and grow directly from the root. The rhizome rises above the ground.

Tiger begonia can be grown both as an ampel plant and as a hanging plant. The flowering period occurs in the autumn-winter period , but some gardeners prefer to cut off the flower stalks so that they do not absorb nutrients and prevent the plant from growing luxuriantly.

Tiger begonia is a hybrid variety bred in 1970. Its second name - Bauer begonia - was given in honor of the German breeder Rudolf Bauer.

The photo below shows tiger begonia:

How does it bloom?

You can see what the tiger variety blooms like in the photo below:

Location and lighting

Begonia in general is an unpretentious crop and is easy to care for. It can grow calmly both in partial shade and in the sun, but if you want to admire its decorative color, stick to the “golden mean”. The ideal location is the window sill of a south window (southwest, southeast), with thick curtains to create diffused lighting. Do not expose the leaves to direct sunlight - this is detrimental to tiger begonia.

Watering and air humidity

Have you forgotten where begonia came from in our region? That's right, from distant tropical places, which means that she loves not only light, but also moisture. But you can’t fill the flower with water. Excessive amounts of moisture will lead to rapid rotting of the roots and cause the death of the plant, so remember: everything is good in moderation. In spring and summer it should be watered 3-4 times a week, in autumn and winter - 2 times is enough.

The soil will help determine whether to take the watering can: if the top layer is damp, wait a little longer until it dries properly.

A day or two after watering, be sure to loosen the soil so that air can flow freely to the roots.
Pour the liquid only under the root, avoiding droplets getting on the leaves - this can lead to sunburn. For this same reason, by the way, tiger begonia cannot be sprayed with a spray bottle. But how to create the appropriate atmosphere?

Firstly, you can place a saucer next to the begonia and regularly add water to it as it evaporates. Secondly, moisten and place a sponge or towel nearby. And the last option: put the pot in a tray, and put some peat, expanded clay or moss next to it, and moisten it. A household humidifier, an artificial fountain nearby, or even just a glass of water will do.

Water for irrigation can only be used at room temperature and purified : passed through a household filter or settled. Tap water contains a huge amount of components harmful to plants - from chlorine to salts, and its hardness leaves much to be desired. Therefore, train yourself to regularly settle the water in an ordinary glass jar without a lid, placing it in a dark place for a day. During this time, harmful substances will evaporate. It is better not to use river, melt and rain water at all.

Temperature

The temperature suitable for tiger begonia is +22+23 degrees. In summer, the thermometer should not fall below +20; in winter, a decrease of 2-3 degrees is allowed, but no more.

A healthy and strong plant can withstand short-term temperature fluctuations, and it tolerates warming much better than cooling. In the latter case, the root system rots.

Top dressing

During the period of active growth (from March to October), the tiger beauty needs additional “ration”, so stock up on complex fertilizers for decorative foliage plants and apply them once a week , alternating between mineral and organic.
More often it is impossible - the plant cannot tolerate excess fertilizing, even despite its benefits. It is advisable to reduce the dosage indicated on the package by half.

Transfer

The root system of a young tiger begonia grows quickly and requires replanting every year; in adults, replanting is allowed less often - once every 2-3 years. The time is early spring.

  • Choose a suitable pot with drainage holes. It is better to give preference to a container whose diameter is slightly larger than its height. You cannot transplant a flower into a large pot for the first time - the root system may rot. The new flowerpot should be slightly (one third) larger than the previous one. The shape is round. Material – ceramics. It allows air to circulate normally and does not retain moisture. A plastic pot can also be used, but you will have to carefully ensure that the soil does not overheat or overcool. Glass containers are not suitable - they are not very functional.
  • Pour a layer of drainage material (expanded clay, sphagnum, small pebbles or broken bricks) into the pot, a thin layer of sphagnum moss on top of it, and soil up to half the entire volume on top.
  • Remove the tiger begonia from the old pot and inspect it. Remove dried and damaged roots with a disinfected blade, powder the cut area with crushed activated charcoal or charcoal, and transplant the plant into a new pot. Do not fill the soil all the way to the top - leave a couple of centimeters from the edge of the pot to the ground. Some gardeners advise cutting off all the leaves so that the begonias adapt faster. But this is optional. It will be enough to take the pot to a dark room for a couple of days.

If you ignore the replanting procedure, your plant, although it will grow, will lose its attractive appearance.

Priming

The soil for tiger begonia should be loose, nutritious and with good drainage properties .
The following mixture is suitable: 2 parts each of leaf soil and sand, and 1 part turf soil. Second option: 1 part turf soil, 2 parts each peat, humus and leaf soil. Permissible acidity is from 6.1 to 7.5. There is an opinion that you should not take soil from a forest or garden, because it can be contaminated with bacteria and pest larvae. However, soil purchased from a specialized store can also be contaminated. In both the first and second cases, it is necessary to sterilize it. There are several ways to do this.

  • Heat for 40 minutes in the oven at 180 degrees, pouring the moist soil into a baking bag.
  • Steam in a water bath: wrap the soil in gauze, place the gauze in a sieve, and hang the sieve over a pan of boiling water. The duration of the procedure is from half an hour to one and a half hours.
  • Use biological fungicides: Agat, Baktofit, Integral, Fitop, Zaslon, Barrier, Fitosporin, Phytocid M. They have a gentle but effective effect on pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

Chemical soil disinfection can be carried out only as a last resort. In addition to benefits, they also cause significant harm. These are iron and copper sulfate, potassium permanganate, Albit.

Trimming

Timely pruning helps not only to form an attractive crown, but also to rejuvenate the plant. The ends of the tops of a young plant are cut off - this stimulates the growth of shoots on the sides . Over time, when these shoots stretch up to 10-12 cm, their tops should be cut off above the bud directed towards the outside. Trim off emerging flower stalks, as well as dried shoots and leaves.

What is important to know before purchasing

In a series of decorative foliage plants, Rex begonia is the queen, which has no competitors in brightness and originality. It is readily grown by experienced gardeners and beginners, captivated by the unpretentiousness of the tropical beauty. If you also want a plant for your home flower garden, first read the following table:

Mature plant sizeFrom 15 to 40 cm in height, leaf size up to 30 cm, the width of some specimens reaches 45 cm
LifespanUp to 10 years or more
BloomBlooms; flowers pink, pale pink, white, beige
AromaWithout smell
SafetyNot poisonous
Difficulty of careUnpretentious plant
UniquenessCommon type
Where can I buy

The highly titled plant differs from its “relatives” by its amazing brightness, regardless of flowering. Begonia Rex may not bloom at all and will only benefit from this. The fact is that inconspicuous buds deprive the plant of its vitality and, in order to preserve the decorative appearance of the leaves, experienced gardeners cut off the flowers.

Interesting fact! Begonia Rex is the flower of businessmen. By placing a houseplant in your office, you can rest assured that it will protect you from rash actions and help you find the only right solution.

Reproduction

Cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is a quick and easy way to grow a new tiger beauty.

  1. Select a medium-sized, healthy-looking cutting. Cut it off with a disinfected utility blade and place it in damp soil.
  2. Place the glass in a warm, dark place (temperature +23 degrees).
  3. As soon as the roots appear, transplant the plant into a pot.

Seeds

A less popular breeding option. Seed material can be purchased at a specialized store , and of the two forms - regular and granular - it is better to choose the latter. Regular seeds are unprocessed seeds, while granulated ones are sold in the form of pills and are much easier to work with. But both of them are planted according to the same scheme:

  • Soak the seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate (1%) for 30-45 minutes, and then rinse under running water. This will destroy pathogenic bacteria.
  • Wash the seeds and plant them in a damp peat tablet, and place the tablet on a tray under polyethylene or glass. The temperature in the room should not be lower than +20 degrees. Pour water into the pan from time to time so that the tablet is always moist.
  • After 2-3 weeks, the first shoots should appear. As soon as the third leaf comes out, pick the plants into separate pots. The second picking is carried out 8 weeks after emergence.

Dividing the bush

It is best to carry out propagation from the mother flower simultaneously with the rejuvenation procedure , because the root system still has to be removed from the ground.
Cut off the part or piece of root protruding above the ground from under the ground, powder the cut area with ash (you can use charcoal or powdered activated carbon), let the cuttings dry for 30-40 minutes, then plant them in pots with soil. Cover the containers with plastic wrap (or transparent glass) and place in a dark place.

When propagating, do not forget to use drainage material: crushed polystyrene foam, for example.

Begonia Tiger - methods of propagation and mistakes in growing at home:

Begonia propagation by dividing the plant

The method is suitable for all types and varieties, except for tuberous ones, although you can unscrew the “extra” shoot from them. The main thing is that the bush is healthy and well-grown.

By dividing the rhizome

Suitable for a group of decorative deciduous begonias. When transplanting from the underground part, shake off the soil and cut it into fragments so that each has at least one growing point.

Immediately plant in the substrate used for mature begonias. Water, cover with a transparent film, which is removed after a new leaf appears.

By shoots

The culture can be propagated by shoots that appear above the soil surface. They are released:

  • rhizomes or tubers of different species;
  • axils of a leaf buried in the substrate.

Reproduction does not have to be carried out during transplantation. The sprout, when it produces several good plates, can be broken out of the ground along with the roots. For this:

  • take it by the base, plunging your fingers shallowly into the substrate;
  • loosen and pull or twist.

If there are roots, plant them immediately in begonia soil. When the shoot breaks off without lower shoots, dilute the substrate with baking powder. Long branches or large leaves are shortened to reduce the load on the root. To be safe, cover with a transparent bag until the new plate is pulled out.

Care for it like an adult plant. Do not let it bloom until the begonia has completely entwined the ball.

The smaller the root of the division, the more you need to cut off the above-ground part when propagating.

Diseases and pests

Careful care of tiger begonia is usually rarely marred by problems . But even the most caring owner can get tired and, for example, pour water into a pot, or forget to draw the curtain on a hot afternoon. Naturally, the plant reacts to such inattention in its characteristic manner and clearly makes it clear to the owner that he made a mistake.

  • Under natural conditions, tiger begonia grows in areas blown by winds. In room conditions (especially with a large number of neighbors), rotting of the rhizome often develops, or pathogenic microflora appears on the stem part and actively multiplies. The sign is the appearance of a gray slimy coating on the stem that cannot be wiped off with your fingers. It is necessary to remove the affected areas, and treat the plant with “Fundazol” or “Euparen”.
  • Signs of powdery mildew are white-brown spots that gradually spread across the leaf blades. They appear due to low humidity at elevated room temperatures. In this case, the drugs “Topaz”, “Alirin-B”, “Fitosporin-M” can help.
  • Aphids are tiny insects that parasitize a flower and lead to its rapid death. They settle on the underside of leaves and feed on cell sap, biting through the leaf blades. Sugary white marks on a flower are the first sign of the appearance of pests and the imminent appearance of another nuisance - sooty fungus. Spraying with a solution of laundry soap or Actellik can help.
  • The soft scale insect is a small insect that can cause damage all year round. By sucking out the juice, insects cause the flower to stop growing, and then to its death. An infusion of garlic will help destroy false scale insects: pour 10 grams of boiling water over a liter and let it brew for an hour.

This variety of begonia will appeal to all exotic lovers.

Home care

Begonia Rex is an unpretentious type of houseplant. But still, for a successful and long existence, a flower must be provided with comfortable conditions .

Location and lighting

Begonias are light-loving species. Largely due to the large amount of diffused sunlight, the bush will delight its owners with a bright crown.

A flower pot should not be placed on northern windowsills or pushed into a dark corner. But it is also undesirable to expose it to direct sunlight , unless you want to cause burns on the tender leaves and their death.

Temperature

The optimal temperature for begonia in the summer is 25 °C. When the air temperature drops below 15 °C, it can shed its leaves and even die. In winter, it is allowed to keep the flower at 17 ° C.

Feeding

Like any ornamental plant, begonia requires regular feeding. It is optimal to apply ready-made complexes once a month during watering.

Pruning a royal begonia flower

Pruning is carried out if necessary , removing dry leaves or leaves with signs of disease. The flower does not need formative pruning, since the bush is compact in size.

How to make it bloom

Royal begonia is famous for its beautiful leaves, but if you want to achieve flowering, you need to take several factors into account :

  1. Sufficient amount of sunlight. Begonia is photophilous, but prefers diffused light.
  2. Nutritious soil with good breathability.
  3. Regular and sufficient watering. Do not allow the soil in the pot to dry out.

If you take all these factors into account, the plant is guaranteed to produce flower stalks. However, all the efforts of the gardener may go to waste. Days go by, but there is no flowering? Possible reasons:

  1. Lack of microelements.
  2. Development of the disease.
  3. The pot is too small and there is no soil left in it. It happens that the transplant took place a long time ago and the roots filled the entire space of the pot.

Leaves and cuttings

One of the easiest and most popular ways to get a new plant. A cutting or leaf is separated from the mother bush with a sterile knife and placed in a solution of a root formation stimulator.

However, simple settled water is sufficient. Roots appear within a few days and the new plant can be planted in an individual pot.

Possible problems

The unpretentiousness of begonia can do a disservice: the owner will frivolously give up on maintaining the regime, and as a result, the death of the flower will not last long.

Diseases

Most often, begonia suffers from powdery mildew, gray rot or bacterial lesions . These diseases can develop due to a lack of nutrients or improper watering.

Pests

Begonias are parasitized by:

  • thrips;
  • spider mite;
  • whitefly;
  • scale insect

To combat parasites, you can use solutions of insecticides or folk remedies , for example a solution of laundry soap. But most often pests come to begonia from neighboring plants, and you should not limit yourself to treating one flower.

Begonia is a beautiful plant that can clean and refresh the air in a room. It does not require complicated care and will decorate any room.
