The most beautiful of geraniums is rosebud. Photos, descriptions of varieties, growing features

Pelargoniums

All types of this plant are distinguished by rapid growth, long and abundant flowering, a pleasant, slightly spicy aroma of foliage, which, in addition to everything else, repels insects.

The plants described below are most widespread.

Zonal pelargonium

It is a herbaceous-type subshrub, growing up to almost a meter in height, having partially colored, slightly fluffy decorative leaves and sessile flowers collected in lush umbels.

These species received this name because of the color of the leaf plate. Depending on the variety, it changes and has contrastingly colored edges. When planted in an outdoor flower bed, plants delight with their flowering all summer until late autumn.

Before the onset of cold weather, it is dug up and trimmed. Store in a bright room at a temperature of about 14 degrees Celsius.

Pelargonium royal

Its bush has a compact structure. Umbrellas with flowers of these species rise slightly above the leaves. Often during flowering, the foliage is hidden by the blossoming buds. The bush becomes like a flowering ball.

These are large-flowered species - their inflorescences are sometimes up to 14 centimeters in diameter. Flowers have a variety of shapes and colors. They often combine two or more colors. The leaf blade is rough with jagged edges.

Pelargonium ampelous

It will wonderfully decorate a hanging garden, terrace, balcony, or any open area. The spectacular appearance of ampelous varieties is given by their long, up to one meter, flexible stems with smooth five-lobed variegated or green leaves.

A striking representative of this species is the ivy-leaved pelargonium, which received this name for its resemblance to ivy. Its flowers are star-shaped, located on fairly long peduncles, which are collected in umbrellas about 9 centimeters in diameter.

Pelargoniums bloom in both single and double flowers. They have a wide range of colors from white to purple. It is not uncommon for flowers to have a two-tone or fragmented color, with corrugated or wavy petals. It all depends on the variety.

Peculiarities

Pelargonium belongs to the Geraniaceae family. South America is considered the birthplace of the plant. Some varieties also grow on the African continent, Australia and other tropical areas. Pelargonium flowers are large, with elongated sepals, in appearance they slightly resemble the beak of a crane or stork, for which the plant received its name Pelargonium, translated from Greek meaning “crane nose”.

The color of the flowers has a wide range and, depending on the variety, can vary from light, almost white, to dark purple, almost black.

Amateur flower growers greatly value pelargonium for its luxurious appearance and long flowering period. In addition, this plant is not capricious and does not require any special care. However, pelargonium is valued not only for its visual attractiveness. It has a lot of useful properties. So, an infusion from the leaves of this plant normalizes blood pressure and calms. A compress of flowers heals open wounds and speeds up the healing process.

As mentioned above, pelargonium belongs to the Geraniaceae family, so the two cultures are often confused with each other. Meanwhile, there are differences both in the shape of the flower and in the size of the plant itself. In 1738, the Dutch scientist Johannes Burman first separated these two names, however, another scientist, botanist Carl Linnaeus from Sweden, challenged this statement in 1753 in his scientific work “Varieties of Plants” and combined the two flowers into one group.

Disputes about this continue to this day. Meanwhile, those flowers that grow everywhere in almost every home are pelargoniums. Unlike geranium, which feels great even at sub-zero temperatures, pelargonium is very thermophilic and does not overwinter in open ground.

What it is?

Rosebud geranium is a spectacular representative of double hybrids with graceful flowers collected in lush inflorescences, reminiscent of small bush roses. The color of the buds varies:

  • white;
  • pink;
  • blue;
  • red.

The flower is quite unpretentious, the main thing is to provide it with proper care:

  1. water and fertilize the plant in a timely manner;
  2. maintain the required temperature and humidity in the room.

South Africa is considered the birthplace of rosebud geranium. Back in the 18th century, the flower was brought to Europe, and in the 19th it was isolated as a separate species. The origin of rosebud geranium occurred through crossing with other species of the same crop.

Varieties of rosebud pelargoniums

Variety Exotica Appleblossom Rosebund

A variety of rosaceous umbrella pelargonium.

Rules for growing pelargonium Appleblossom Rosebud

Apple Blossom Rosebud needs conditions typical for zonal pelargoniums, that is, good lighting and warm conditions, a nutritious, but at the same time loose, permeable substrate.

Thus, growing pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud comes down to several points:

  • Lighting. It is preferable to have well-lit window sills that are exposed to the sun for several hours a day. On the south side, it is advisable to shade the pots so that the leaves do not suffer from burns; it is better not to grow them on northern windows;
  • Watering. It is necessary to moisten the soil constantly, as the top layer of the substrate dries, but always in moderation. The earthen lump should neither dry out nor become waterlogged;
  • Trimming. To obtain a compact bush with a harmonious crown, pelargonium must be pruned. Strong shortening of shoots is carried out at the end of February, sanitary pruning is carried out as necessary. Pinching the apical and lateral cuttings is also required;
  • Feeding. During the period of bud formation and flowering, Appleblossom Rosebud must be fed using fertilizers for Geraniums or compositions for flowering indoor plants.

Like other zonal pelargoniums, Apple Blossom Rosebud loves fresh air and ventilation, but reacts negatively to drafts. For this reason, with the onset of warm weather, the bush is taken out to the balcony, veranda or loggia, creating flower arrangements and always returning it to the apartment before the cold weather.

The optimal temperature for growing and flowering Apple Blossom Rosebud is between +17-+23 degrees. When the temperature drops below +12, the plant stops developing and often dies from hypothermia of the root system.

The Apple Blossom Rosebud variety will decorate your windowsill, delighting you with lush flowering if grown correctly.

Caring for Fischers Appleblossom pelargoniums

Geranium hybrid plants are popular because they have very beautiful flowering, bright shades of leaves, and compact bushes. But so that they do not lose their qualities, they need constant care. These plants will stretch their stems if they grow in an area with insufficient light. It is necessary to monitor the shape of the crown of plants: in spring and autumn, shape the bush, cut and thin out old and deformed branches, shorten shoots, remove dried flower stalks and leaves.

During flowering, pelargoniums need regular watering with settled, rain or spring water at room temperature. Every two weeks in spring and summer, solutions of complex fertilizers are applied to the root zone of flowering plants after the main waterings.

Important! Without fertilizing, plants will stop growing and will not be able to form flower buds. Pelargoniums bloom actively in spring, summer and mid-autumn. From mid-October to the end of February, plants should be placed in cool rooms so that they stop their development and can take a break from active processes

During this period, do not feed the flowers; water them when the soil in the flower pots is 1/3 dry

For your information! To prevent plants from getting sick and suffering from pests, biological products designed to combat rot, viruses, and insect larvae are used for preventive purposes. These can be fungicides foundationazol, ridomil gold, phytosporin-M, insecticides actara, fas, calypso.

Zonal variegated pelargonium

Reproduction of hybrid plants cannot be carried out using seeds; many novice flower growers greatly regret this, because not everyone is immediately able to root a cutting of geranium or pelargonium. But it’s worth learning so that you can admire such beautiful flowers as Fischers Appleblossom pelargoniums.

Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud

They say this variety is the favorite of the Queen of England. Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud is the star of every collection. Maybe because it is one of the oldest rosaceous varieties of pelargonium (some say it is already 200 years old, others say it was developed in the post-war years). Its inflorescences are very similar to a bouquet of small roses of the original color: in the middle they are the most delicate green-white color, towards the middle of the petal the color changes to white, and the edges of the petal are pink.

Naturally, when I studied numerous rosebud pelargoniums (rosaceae), I knew that sooner or later I would buy an Apple Blossom. But she came to me earlier than I planned.

My bush is still young and this is its first flowering. But, it must be said that this variety is, as they say, a “horse”. The leaves grow so huge that they can easily exceed the size of the palm, and the bush itself, if not shaped, will grow like a stick.

Yes, this variety will not bush on its own. Or at least, it will not bush as readily as its rosaceous counterparts.

Therefore, flower growers immediately warn that Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud sometimes requires very harsh pruning in order to grow as a compact bush and have several inflorescences.

PS 10 days have passed. The roses of this pelargonium fluffed up as they should and turned into a completely dense ball-inflorescence.

I didn't do this. I wanted to check from my own experience how big this pelargonium will grow if I don’t shape it. So, in 3 months, the Apple Blossom Rosebud pelargonium cutting grew almost 2 times larger than what I bought it for. It produced a couple of side shoots, but not as large as other pelargoniums. The leaves have grown huge. The stem is a rather sickly piece of junk.

There is only one inflorescence so far, but it looks like it is about to release a second one. There are not enough flowers on the first inflorescence - only 6, but the rosettes themselves are quite large, about 3 cm in diameter. The color of the flower itself is incomparable. I haven't seen anything more tender yet. The pink edges of the petals can be of different shades: if pelargonium stands in the sun, it has enough light, the edges of the petals become intensely pink. If there is not enough light, the petals around the edges are pale pink.

This undoubtedly noteworthy bush, due to its size, needs to be watered quite generously (but not flooded!) and fed.

Description of the variety

Pelargonium Apple Blossom appeared in South Africa. Back in the seventeenth century, the flower was brought to Europe. A hundred years later, gardeners identified it as a separate variety. It is believed that the species arose by chance, through an unexpected mutation. Then it reached its modern form when it was crossed with other varieties (approximately this happened in 1870).

Rosebud is considered a double plant. The appearance of the inflorescence resembles a pink bud that is about to open completely. Geraniums are often confused with a rose growing on a bush. That is why it is called Rosaceae pelargonium. But flowers differ from roses in their leaves.

Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud

Pelargonium Apple Blossom is a perennial plant that loves light. It is worth highlighting several points that characterize this inflorescence, which belongs to the geranium family:

  • The rhizome of the flower is dense;
  • the plant has a herbaceous and rigid stem, which often becomes lignified from the root in older species;
  • the leaves look like circles with a cutout not exceeding a third of the width;
  • the fruit of the flower is in the form of a box;
  • propagated by seeds, cuttings, by dividing bushes;
  • loves warmth.

Important! The plant needs to be watered abundantly, but not often. There are no thorns on the stem

The inflorescence has the shape of a ball, for the beauty of which flower growers, even beginners, want to have this particular flower in their garden

There are no thorns on the stem. The inflorescence has the shape of a ball, for the beauty of which flower growers, even beginners, want to have this particular flower in their garden.

Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud does not look pretty in winter. The stem becomes bare, as the leaves turn yellow and fall off, and there is no flowering at all. The developed geranium variety blooms all the time, except in cold weather. The seeds are large, they can be collected and planted in a cup in the fall in order to transplant the sprout into the ground in the spring. The plant is quickly accepted and begins to bloom immediately.

Many inexperienced flower lovers use incorrect plant names:

  • pelargonium Appleblossom rosebud;
  • pelargonium Appleblossom rosebud;
  • Pelargonium Appleblossom.

Features of cultivation

Caring for pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud is not difficult, since the flower is unpretentious. It does not need to be watered often; it grows well on the sunny side of the windowsill. Without light, the leaves turn white and fall off, the stem becomes longer, and flowers do not form.

Important! For this species you need to choose a small pot.

This is due to the fact that the roots are not very branched, so they cannot absorb the entire volume, the soil begins to sour, which will lead to the death of the plant. It is necessary to ensure that the soil is well permeable to air and moisture. Therefore, you should make a soil mixture from:

  • fine expanded clay;
  • coconut fiber;
  • fertilizers in granules.

You cannot overdo it with fertilizer; you need to use the dosage indicated on the package.

You should also add loam and sand, which retain moisture. Everything is put in equal proportions. It is necessary to water rarely, but abundantly. In this case, the water must be hard.

Such water requirements are due to the fact that the pelargonium species Apple Blossom Rosebud is a calciphile. If the plant easily tolerates drought, then strong moisture is bad, and the process of rotting begins. Water into the container in which the pot stands. In summer, daily moisturizing is required, in autumn and spring once a week, and in winter once every two weeks. The main thing is to allow the top layer to dry two fingers deep.

The description of the plant shows that it is the best of the geraniums. Experts often recommend this.

Technical data of the plant

In Russia, indoor hybrids Fischers appleblossom pelargonium are popular, descriptions of which can be found in catalogs of companies selling plants. For this type of flower, the directory provides the following characteristics:

  • The bush branches well. The seedling takes root 10-12 days after planting;
  • leaves are round and green. They are bordered by a dark stripe;
  • The hybrid's caps are quite tight. Large flowers are shaped like a rose. Their color can be white or reddish. Flowering lasts 4-6 months;
  • the dimensions of Fischer pelargonium in the indoor version do not exceed 0.7-0.75 m in height. If it grows in a greenhouse, the height of the bush can reach 2 m.

Note! It is better not to leave geraniums in a room where the air temperature is below 14-15 °C. Under such conditions, the hybrid may get sick and die.

The plant has medicinal properties. It emits an extract that can relieve respiratory tract damage. This African subshrub is used to make an oil that calms the nervous system.

Growing

Peculiarities:

  • the flower is grown in spacious pots, but not in open ground;
  • pelargoniums do not tolerate bad weather - gusty winds, rain, cold and fog are destructive for them;
  • flowers love the sun, but you shouldn’t leave them in the heat under the scorching rays;
  • in winter, most varieties are dormant, they lose their decorative effect, stretch out and stop blooming;
  • It is not advisable to place plants near heating radiators in winter;
  • from the beginning of the growing season, the bushes need to be shaped by proper pruning of the shoots;
  • faded roses need to be removed - then the whole bunch will continue to bloom;
  • Rosebud pelargoniums are fertilized with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

The soil

In order for a plant to please the grower with its flowering, it is necessary to choose the right soil for it. The soil should be loose, nutritious, and have neutral acidity. We must not forget about good drainage - 1/3 of the pot is filled with expanded clay.

It is recommended to use the following composition:

  • agroperlite – 1/10 part;
  • sand – 1/10 part;
  • humus – 2/10 parts;
  • peat – 2/10 parts;
  • turf soil - 4/10 parts.

Lighting

For rosebud pelargoniums, southern and southwestern windows are best suited. If this is not possible, then you need to provide the plants with special phytolamps. In very hot weather, when the air temperature reaches +30 degrees, the sun can burn the leaves of plants. On the street it is better to move them to partial shade, and in the house to protect them from the rays with curtains.

Temperature

In summer, the optimal temperature for this plant is considered to be from +20 to +25 degrees. In winter it should be at least +15 degrees.

Watering

In its homeland in Africa, this plant species lives in arid soils rich in limestone, calcium and chalk, so the plants tolerate drought well and suffer from waterlogging. Plants should not be watered too much. This should only be done when the top layer of soil is completely dry. In winter, watering is reduced.

Plants do not like spraying, like all varieties with pubescent leaves. Pelargoniums need to be watered carefully so as not to soak the roses. The water must be soft, standing for at least 24 hours.

Landing

Appleblossom, like all pelargoniums, reproduces vegetatively: shoots and seeds. If the pelargonium variety is hybrid, then it is not worth propagating it by seeds. Classic varieties, on the contrary, give excellent results when sown.

Planting seeds

This event looks like this:

  • first of all, the seeds must be soaked for 2 hours before sowing;
  • then you need to distribute them in the prepared greenhouse at a distance of at least 2 cm from each other;
  • after this, you need to cover the crops with a small layer of loose, moist soil;
  • The last stage is spraying the soil with a spray bottle.

The greenhouse is kept at a temperature of no more than +25 degrees and must be ventilated. The first shoots will appear in 5-7 days.

The shoots are rooted in water. The process looks like this step by step:

  • you need to take an opaque container;
  • then prepare a solution for seedlings: take “Kornevin” powder on the tip of a knife for 100 g of water;
  • the plants are kept in the preparation for a day;
  • Pelargoniums are placed in a glass with settled water and two tablets of activated carbon until roots form.

Rooting in the ground. This process consists of the following manipulations:

  • when pruning the plant (in February-March), you need to select strong, healthy tops and lateral cuttings with 2-3 internodes;
  • then you should prepare separate cups with drainage holes;
  • after this you need to fill the container with wet peat or sand;
  • it is necessary to plant the cuttings in the recesses, dipping the tip of the stem in “Kornevin”;
  • the appearance of fresh leaves indicates successful rooting.

Pelargonium Apple Blossom Rosebud: what you need to know about the variety

Apple Blossom Rosebud is one of the most attractive rosaceous varieties of the zonal group of pelargoniums. It is valued not only for its highly decorative flowering properties, but also for its unique unpretentiousness, which allows the bush to be grown indoors. Like other geraniums, Apple Blossom Rosebud requires proper care and suitable conditions.

Apple Blossom Rosebud: description and features of the variety

The first plant of the Apple Blossom Rosebud variety was obtained in 1948 as a result of long-term breeding work. This rosaceous pelargonium is rightly considered the star of any collection due to the beauty of the inflorescences, the color of which seems truly watercolor. Inside, the buds are illuminated in light green, the central part of the petal becomes pure white, and along the edge there is a soft pink border. The caps are formed densely, retain freshness for a long time, due to which budding can last all summer (see photo).

The intensity of the color of the buds, as well as their size, depends on the temperature conditions of the buds.

In the summer, when exposed to sunlight, the flowers acquire a bright pink border with a smaller flower diameter; in the fall, the colors cannot boast of saturation, but the buds increase in size. The variety does not shed its petals - the buds slowly dry out on the peduncle, turning into a “herbarium”.

Apple Blossom Rosebud is a variety that requires constant shaping. To obtain a lush crown, pelargonium needs to be regularly trimmed and pinched so that the side buds wake up. If you let the development of the cuttings take its course, Appleblossom Rosebud will grow into one trunk and turn into a real palm tree, which certainly will not add decorative value to it.

The diameter of the leaves of Apple Blossom Rosebud is impressive - in most cases the plate reaches the size of an average palm, and for this feature the variety has received the status of a “horse” among flower growers. The rather large crown of pelargonium requires appropriate maintenance conditions - the plant prefers well-lit window sills, regular feeding during the active growing season and good watering.

Rules for growing pelargonium Appleblossom Rosebud

The Apple Blossom Rosebud variety will decorate your windowsill, delighting you with lush flowering if grown correctly.

Characteristics of species and varieties

Several intraspecific groups can grow at home:

  • The ampelous type has a creeping stem that does not grow upward. Features cascading foliage. An ivy-shaped plant that hangs down and is used to decorate the garden;
  • The zonal species is distinguished by its endurance. Its height reaches 80 cm. The foliage of the species is dark, with a smooth transition to light colors. The fluffiness of the leaves is considered a special feature. The most popular variety that is not planted in open ground. The plant, although hardy, is still demanding;
  • The dwarf (miniature) species is distinguished by its compact bushes. There is no need for forming. This variety is preferred to be grown not only in open ground, but also in limited areas. Flowers look very impressive in small pots, since the flowering is abundant and small lush bushes are formed. The plant is relatively picky in its maintenance.

Each of these subspecies has many different varieties, which differ in color, bud shape and content characteristics. The most popular are the rosebud pelargonium variety Red Scarlet, Rosebud supreme, Arctic, Snow and many others.

Rosebud variety Red Scarlet

It is necessary to consider the description of popular varieties:

  • Vectis rosebud is a small-looking, mature bush that looks attractive. A good option for shaping. The main advantage is the abundant, long-lasting flowering. The bud is bright red. The inside of flower petals is darker than the outside;
  • Pelargonium Rosebud Supreme - blooms with bright crimson, thick, double buds. The bud turned inside out has a different color scheme. The underside of the bud is white, which looks unusual. The bushes are straight and strong. The inflorescences of Rosebud Supreme Pelargonium are dense, bloom for a long time, and with proper care, flowering can be extended throughout the year;
  • Pink rambler is one of the popular varieties. A bright and lush bush with corrugated leaves. Flower bud of bright pink color with red impurities. The front side is lighter;
  • Margaretha pelargonium is a variety of royal geraniums used exclusively for decorative purposes. The blooms are arranged in several rows, which in appearance resemble small bouquets of unopened roses. The foliage has curly outlines resembling a border. The height depends on the location and can reach 80 centimeters;
  • Red pelargonium Rosebud red is a plant with red double inflorescences. It has long and abundant flowering. The inflorescences themselves are thick, lush, dense. There is no need to form bushes. Optimal temperature for growing: 25 degrees in summer, from 15 to 20 degrees in winter. The flower is grown indoors;
  • Pelargonium baby rosebud is a compact plant. The buds are red, with a faint crimson tint, white in the middle. The leaves are inconspicuous, of normal shape;
  • Beverly park pelargonium is distinguished by large flower buds, double, apricot color. At the edges the color of the inflorescences is lighter. The leaves are green, darkening towards the center.

On a note. Regardless of the chosen species and variety: Pelargonium Rosebud Supreme, Vectis rosebud or Pelargonium Baby Rosebud, they need proper care, which will extend the flowering period.

Where and how to plant?

This plant will require much more attention than ordinary “balls”. Let's consider what needs to be provided for good growth and flowering.

Lighting and location

This plant is considered light-loving, but it should not be allowed to be exposed to direct rays of the sun. Because of this, the stems and leaves begin to wither, turn yellow, and there is not enough water for normal growth.

For this reason, you should choose a place with good lighting, but darken it with special window material or fabric. This way the geranium will have a sufficient amount of light, but there will be no burns that spoil the health and appearance of the beauty. In addition, strong sun causes the plant to bloom less.

Such pelargoniums grow not only indoors, but also in the garden or on the balcony. If you comply with all conditions of detention

It is important to note that all varieties of this variety are sensitive to prolonged low temperatures. It is better if the flowers are not exposed to temperatures less than +10

Soil requirements

Soil for rosebud geranium can be purchased at a special store or prepared with your own hands. You should purchase land with an acidity of 5.6-6.5.

Self-preparation will require a combination of turf soil (4 parts), coarse sand (1 part), peat (2 parts), perlite (1 part) and humus (2 parts). In such soil the plant feels great.

The planting pot should be slightly larger than the root system. If it is too free, flowering will not occur, but if it is too tight, the plant will wither.

Home care

Where and when to plant?

Growing a flower at home does not require special care. To plant a flower, you should choose a pot with drainage holes at the bottom. The roots of the flower are sensitive to moisture and can begin to rot from constant contact with water, so drainage is essential.

  1. You need to plant the flower in a clean container. Before planting, treat the pot with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. This will help destroy bacteria and pest larvae.
  2. You need to choose a looser soil that will allow water to pass through and dry out quickly, this will help protect the roots from rotting. A universal earthen mixture is well suited for planting rosebud geranium.

Since geranium is considered a light-loving flower, you need to choose a place with scattering sunlight. A little partial shade will not prevent the flower from developing and blooming throughout the season. In the hot sun and shade, pelargonium will not be able to fully grow and bloom.

What should the soil be like?

Rosebud geranium prefers to grow in loose, nutritious and moist soil, which should have good air permeability.
Soil can be purchased at a specialized store or made independently. To prepare the soil yourself you will need:

  • Coarse sand (1 part).
  • Peat (2 parts).
  • Humus (2 parts).
  • Turf soil (4 parts).
  • Perlite (1 part).

In the future, all that is required of the gardener is to moisten the substrate in time, apply fertilizer twice in one season, and cut off old shoots during replanting.

The new place for the flower should be slightly larger than the root system. In a loose pot, the flower will not bloom, but in a cramped pot the plant will wither.

Lighting and Humidity

The flower is considered light-loving, but geranium does not tolerate direct sunlight. The plant loses its decorative appearance and may get leaf burns.

Geranium is one of the most unpretentious plants to indoor air humidity. It tolerates dry air calmly, and in winter the dry edges of the leaves can indicate a lack of humidity.

Direct sunlight on domestic flowers can damage the leaves and ruin the decorative appearance of the plant. But it is not recommended to place it in the shade; the flower is very light-loving! Geraniums should be placed in a well-lit place, but the window should be slightly darkened.

Watering

  • It is recommended to water the flower moderately, avoiding stagnation of water in the pot.
  • Frequent watering is not recommended, as the geranium may begin to rot.
  • It is recommended to moisten the soil only as needed. If the soil in the pot is moist, then there is no need to water the plant.
  • For irrigation, only settled water should be used.

It is easier for the plant to endure long droughts, since the leaves have the ability to accumulate and retain moisture.

The flower should be sprayed once a week with a spray bottle, and the leaves should be wiped with a damp cloth.

Trimming

  1. It is recommended to do the first pruning in the spring, when the tops are pinched and the side shoots are removed.
  2. Sanitary pruning should be done after flowering. To do this, you should remove all dried stems and faded buds to prevent the appearance of pests and the development of fungus.

Reproduction

Geranium is considered a fairly delicate flower, so it can show vagaries during reproduction. The flower can be propagated in two ways: cuttings and seed method.

Cuttings

You can cut geraniums at any time of the year . But the best period is considered to be from March to July:

  1. A lignified stalk with five internodes should be cut from the selected flower. The herbaceous cutting will not take root.
  2. You can buy soil at the store or make it yourself; you will also need vermicut.
  3. Pour the nutrient mixture into plastic cups and plant the prepared cuttings.
  4. Preparation of the cutting is simple: cut the cutting and remove unnecessary leaves from it (only the rudiment of the leaf is left). The cut should be air dried for 30 minutes.
  5. For the first few days, you need to water it carefully so as not to overwater it or overdry it.
  6. Rooting under the lamp occurs within three weeks.
  7. After the first roots appear, you can add more fertile soil.

Seed method

  1. Seeds should be placed in a damp cloth or gauze. Leave in this state for 7-10 days and monitor the moisture content of the fabric.
  2. When the seeds swell, transplant them into prepared nutrient soil and cover with plastic wrap.
  3. After the first four leaves appear, the film must be removed and the plants planted in separate pots.

It is recommended to water the shoots only with water at room temperature.

Diseases and pests

Geranium can be subject to negative influences of both external and internal nature.

Diseases

  • Chlorosis . This is a yellowing of the leaves from the center to the edge; the leaves lose their color and may become covered with blisters.
  • Dropsy . Signs of dropsy are considered to be the appearance of watery cushions on the bottom of the leaf, which later become covered with a brown crust.
  • Bacterial burn . When a bacterial burn occurs, brown spots appear on the leaves of the flower, the leaves begin to curl and dry out at the edges.
  • Powdery mildew . The leaves of the plant are covered with a white coating.
  • Black leg . Signs of blackleg are blackening and rotting of the stem and young cuttings.
  • Gray rot . Gray-brown spots appear, which then become wet.

Pests

  • Whitefly . The insect lays larvae that eat the watery parts of the flower.
  • Aphid . Aphids can cause the death of geraniums, as the insect sucks out all the vital juices.
  • Spider mite . You can learn about pests by the presence of gray webs.

To prevent pests or bacteria, preventative measures should be taken. They are very simple: take proper care of the plant and regularly inspect for insects.

Diseases and pests

The best way is to prevent diseases and pest attacks. And this requires timely detection and prevention. Any problem already has external manifestations at the very beginning:

  1. Are the leaves withering? This may indicate that the room is too warm or the plant is close to the radiator. Perhaps you should increase watering and increase air humidity.
  2. If the leaves change color, this may be a signal that the flower is watered too much or does not have enough light. Or both.
  3. Are there brown spots on the leaves? This is a viral infection. Replant the flower in a different soil. The plant should also be treated with fungicides. Be sure to check for the presence of parasites. And regardless of the results, you need to spray the flower with an aspirin solution (1.25 per 10 liters of water).
  4. Are the flowers starting to dry out? Perhaps it's a fungus. Pelargonium should be treated with Bordeaux mixture 5% or phytosporin.
  5. If a whitefly or aphid has attacked, treat the plant with phytoverim. And at the same time treat all the plants nearby.
  6. Gray rot is a formidable enemy of pelargonium. Characteristic signs are brown spots on the lower leaves. They spread quickly, and if nothing is done, the plant may die. Treatment is carried out comprehensively. Pelargonium should be treated with a fungicide, eliminate nitrogen-containing fertilizers, reduce watering and spraying, and monitor the looseness of the soil. There should also be enough light in the room.
  7. If the plant wilts, a fungus may be the cause. Characteristic signs are yellowing and wilting of the lower leaves. Then the yellowness spreads to the remaining leaves. If this happens, pelargonium needs to be treated with trichodermin. In this case, the soil should be changed. Since some types of parasitic fungi persist in the soil for up to 15 years.

Pelargoniums come in different types. Read about royal, pink, variegated, tulip-shaped.

Description and photos of varieties

Rose of Amsterdam

"Rose of Amsterdam" refers to miniature varieties. It has very beautiful white double inflorescences. In the sun they may take on a pink tint. Interestingly, the age of the flower can affect the shade. Older flowers are brighter in color. The flowers are usually bicolored, white gradually turning pink.

It is best to place it on the east side. There should be enough light, but direct sunlight should not be allowed. It grows quite quickly. Does not tolerate cold and drafts. The minimum air temperature in winter should not fall below +15 degrees.

Supreme

"Rosebud Supreme" blooms with bright crimson, dense, double flowers forming a dense head. A characteristic feature is the white underside of the flower. It looks very unusual. The bush is erect and durable. The head of inflorescences is very dense and the plant blooms for a long time. And if you try, it will bloom all year round.

NOTE: Requires molding. In summer it is allowed to take it out into the fresh air

But this should be done with caution. Prefers moderate watering

In hot sunny weather, the pots should be shaded to prevent overheating of the soil.

Apple blossom

"Apple Blossom Rosebud" is one of the oldest varieties. They have a delicate green-white color. At the same time, the edges of the flower are bright pink. They look quite unusual. This variety requires feeding, and often. It also needs molding. Moderate watering

If you follow the safety rules, you can take it out into the open air. In hot weather it is necessary to shade

Vectis

"Vectis Rosebud" belongs to miniature zonal varieties. The flowers are large, wine-red in color. The appearance of the inflorescences is slightly disheveled, unlike most rosebuds. It has a long flowering period. The petals have a light underside. The leaves of this variety are dark green in color.

Pink

The variety “Swanland Pink-Australien Pink Rosebud” has a very dense head of inflorescences. The flowers are soft pink and do not lose their shape throughout the entire flowering period. Flowering is abundant and long lasting. Due to the large inflorescences, it seems that they are lying on the leaves. This is a distinctive feature of this variety. It has large leaves and short internodes. The bush itself is well formed and loves small pots.

Red

'Rosebud Red' has beautiful double red inflorescences. Blooms for a long time and abundantly. The inflorescence cap is dense, thick, lush. The bush requires virtually no shaping. It does not tolerate low temperatures, but heat is also harmful to it.

Optimal temperature:

  • In summer no more than +25 degrees.
  • In winter +15 – +20 degrees.

TIP: Doesn't like rain or wind. Therefore, it is better to refrain from replanting it in the ground and taking it outside. It is better to place the flower in a moderately lit room.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

We invite you to read the descriptions of particularly popular varieties, as well as look at photos of plants whose flowers resemble roses.

Belongs to the zonal miniature type. Has beautiful double flowers. At first, the flowers bloom white, but as they mature, they acquire a pink tint. In one head of inflorescence, there can be two colors at once - white and pink, which gives special sophistication and beauty. The inflorescences are small in size, but densely planted. Blooms profusely during the summer season.

Supreme

The Rosebud Supreme plant differs from other species in its very late onset of flowering, but upon entering the flowering season, it blooms a huge number of inflorescences, each of which looks like a ball strewn with small rose buds of a beautiful red color. The bush of the plant is powerful, strong, tall.

The Appleblossom rosebud plant grows very quickly and, without careful and frequent formative pruning, grows into a long, powerful bush. The plant blooms luxuriantly. The inflorescences are distinguished by their original colors. In the middle there are green-white petals, then the color changes to white, and the edges are soft pink.

Vectis

The bush of this species is compact, easy to shape, and the flowering is long and abundant. With the beginning of spring, inflorescences form, turning into flowers of rich red color. The outer side of the petal is much lighter than the inner. The plant blooms for a long time, maintaining its unique shape throughout the entire flowering period.

Pink (Pink Rambler)

This variety of zonal pelargonium is the most famous. The bush is unpretentious in care, has a powerful structure and lush, abundant flowering. The flowers are bright, pink-carmine in color, the foliage is rich, corrugated. The underside of the petal is lighter. Pink begins to form inflorescences a little later than pink-flowered zonal plants, but compensates for this with continuous flowering throughout the season.

Red

Flowering is very long, from May to September. The color of the petals can be monochromatic or have a color in the form of spots, strokes, stripes. The shoots of the plant at the base acquire a tree-like appearance, the leaves are dense, pubescent on the front side.

Pests and parasites. Aphids or whiteflies can settle on a pelargonium bush. Parasites will suck all the juices out of the plant, which will lead to the death of the plant

It is important to treat the bush with insecticides. Plant disease

Most often, the plant is damaged by gray mold.

Plant disease. Most often, the plant is damaged by gray mold.

When mold appears, it is important not to water the flower. Yellowing and drying of leaves

The plant lacks moisture. Perhaps the water is not getting to the roots. Mulching will help

Yellowing and drying of leaves. The plant lacks moisture. Perhaps the water is not getting to the roots. Mulching will help.

The leaves are withered and fall off. Excess moisture. Thinning the plants can help.

Doesn't bloom. This may be due to lack of light and feeding

It is important to ensure the presence of bright, diffused color and regularly apply mineral fertilizers for flowering plants

The flowers are drying. Perhaps there is a fungus. Treatment with Fitosporin or watering with 5% Bordeaux mixture will help. The presence of rusty, gray spots or white fluff on the leaves may also indicate a fungus.

It is important to ensure loosening of the soil for air intake and antifungal treatment

Bacterial infection. Brown spots will appear on the plant

It is important to replant into a different soil and apply fungicides

Compared to Denise, Fisher pelargonium has the following advantages:

  • larger bush;
  • it is better for the plant to branch;
  • tolerates diseases well;
  • the flower is 1.2-1.3 times larger.

Among the disadvantages are the following:

  • in the heat or shade it stops blooming;
  • you need to properly form a geranium bush;
  • Fisher is susceptible to attack by garden pests.

Pelargonium Appleblossom: description of varieties and cultivation

For almost 200 years, Appleblossom pelargonium has been decorating our lives with its wonderful blooms.

Apple Blossom translated into Russian means “apple blossom”. Thanks to skillful breeders, to the delight of lovers of these flowers, not only pink pelargoniums have appeared in the world, reminiscent of the picturesque blooms of spring gardens, but also many other varieties of stunning beauty.

Pelargonium Fischers Appleblossom. This is a magnificent rosebud rosaceous pelargonium variety. Pale pink inflorescences with peach or red edging are collected in lush clusters on elastic short peduncles. Blooms profusely from May to August.

"Fisher" branches well, has dense large stems, and is quite compact. It propagates vegetatively, by lateral shoots with five leaves. Loves light and warmth.

Ungarisk Appleblossom. Zonal rosaceous pelargonium with bright red velvety petals with a lilac edge and a white underside. The inflorescences are distinguished by their splendor and density, are endowed with a high peduncle, and look elegant and solemn. The bush is large, powerful, branched, has emerald foliage with pronounced zones.

“Ungarik” is a high-maintenance variety that requires warmth, good lighting and bush shaping. To see the first flowering, you need to be patient: the plant may not bloom in the first year of life.

Rosebud Westdale Appleblossom. This is a rosebud pelargonium, which has unusually colored leaves with a green central zone and large, light milky edging around the edges. The flowering of the plant is no less amazing: the flowers are white, double. They look like half-open roses with a soft pink or red border.

The plant blooms very luxuriantly all season with magnificent large caps. The bush itself is tall, powerful, and looks decorative.

Westdale loves partial shade, diffused light and warmth. The plant is demanding when it comes to watering: it cannot tolerate dry air and soil, and does not tolerate waterlogging or drafts. It's hard to please him. As a sign of its dissatisfaction, the “capricious” always strives to shed its leaves.

Knight Appleblossom F1. This is a zonal, very unpretentious, beautiful hybrid variety that blooms all year round in the house, and in the warm season (from May to September) - outside. The flowers of the plant are pink-carmine, with a light pink center. The magnificent, unusually colored foliage is cherry-brown with a bright green edge.

"Night" is a large, branched and lush bush. The plant loves light, but can bloom beautifully in shaded areas and is drought tolerant. Loves good and regular watering. It feels great not only on southern, but also on western or eastern windows.

Happy Appleblossom. This pelargonium is the pride of any gardener. Against the background of leaves with a central zone in the shape of a light green butterfly, huge white and pink caps of inflorescences of delicate roses rise on tall slender peduncles.

The bush requires care, loves the sun, regular but moderate watering. It is necessary to form the crown of the plant, otherwise the shoots stretch out and look like straight sticks and do not branch. Cuttings cut while trimming a bush take root well.

Exotica Appleblossom. Not small, but very compact bush, with dense, soft pink double roses. The variety is distinguished by the fact that it blooms elegantly and for a long time. In bright summer light, the petals may take on a creamy or salmon color. Bright light greenery is in great harmony with the lovely voluminous pink inflorescences.

Apple Blossom Rosebud. An ancient variety that every collector in love with rosebud pelargoniums has. With its sophistication and beauty, Apple Blossom Rosebud won the heart of Queen Elizabeth of England. Graceful roses, collected in an inflorescence-bouquet, have a white center with a light green tint and creamy petals that smoothly turn into a rich pink hue. The bush is strong, with fleshy thick stems and delicate, light green foliage.

This noble plant does not require special attention; it feels great outdoors and at home.

Regular haircuts, timely watering and warmth are all you need for gorgeous and long flowering.

Rosaceous pelargoniums (geraniums) – review

I have already talked a little about my beautiful pelargoniums and I would like to dwell in more detail on the characteristics of rosebuds. I only have three: Swanland Pink, Apple Blossom Rosebud and ringless. I’ll tell you about my observations on caring for them; these are not truisms, but a personal opinion.

Rosebud pelargoniums got their name from the shape of the flower, it is like a rose. In other words, this is terry pelargonium.

All pelargoniums feel better at low temperatures: 10-20 degrees. In rosebuds, high temperatures cause the rosette to open incompletely. In the autumn, on the pelargonium loggia they produced the largest possible flowers, almost turning them inside out)))

Apple Blossom Rosebud

Swanland Pink

Rosebud pelargonium with pink flowers. The color is pure pink. It blooms readily, produces a lot of flower stalks, on one Swanland Pink root (everyone lives in a small pot, there is not enough space) all summer there were 4-5-6 flower stalks, from the main and side shoots. Doesn't crumble.

Swanland Pink

Swanland Pink flower size

Apple Blossom Rosebud

Translated as “apple tree bouquet.” The flowers are white with a pink border.

Apple Blossom Rosebud

Apple Blossom Rosebud flower size

In summer, in the sun, the border is intensely pink. In autumn, pale pink, almost invisible (little sun).

October, the border of Apple Blossom Rosebud has brightened

The size of the flower is the same; in cold temperatures it becomes larger. It doesn’t fall off, when the peduncle dries out completely, I break it off. I have it growing in a small pot, but it’s on the south side. Therefore, it bloomed well in the summer (they write about it that the “horse” does not bloom until it gains mass). The first flower appeared on the very baby.

Flowers do not fall off and remain dry

I spend the winter on an insulated loggia, it’s cool there. In the spring, I cut all pelargoniums into fresh ones, because... they “eat up the earth”, the earth after them is empty, like dust.

Rosebud pelargonium does not reproduce by seeds, so you should not look for where to buy seeds.
