Varietal violet “Ice Rose” - a luxurious bouquet on your windowsill!

Violet ice rose was created by a competent breeder Svetlana Repkina from Ukraine. The plant is characterized by fairly large flowers that have a double shape. The shade of the petals here is soft lilac. At the same time, it goes perfectly with dark green, richly colored leaves.

This variety has simple care rules, so even novice gardeners can grow it. Ice rose is so prized among flower lovers because it has a large number of species and different shades. Each time this plant has a completely different shade of inflorescences.

Thus, the inside of the petals are white, with cherry or lilac spots in the center. The wavy edges of the leaves most often have a light green tint. The leaf plates are quite large in size, have an uneven edge and a bright, rich green color. These leaves grow from the center, so they look from the outside like a beautiful compact rosette.

The main difference of the variety is that the white petals of the flowers have a lilac blotch in the middle, as well as an uneven lace edge, which is sometimes yellow, sometimes light green. The flowering is quite lush and amounts to approximately 7 flowers per inflorescence. In this case, there will be a direct dependence on the temperature of the room where the violet grows. So at low temperatures the plant will have a white tint of flowers, and if the temperature is above 25 degrees, the petals will be crimson with a contrasting white edge.

History of the variety, decoding of the abbreviation RS. Description and features

The full name of the RS variety is Ice Rose. The first two letters are an abbreviation of the surname and name of the breeder Repkina Svetlana. It was through her efforts that this wonderful variety was developed.

The plant primarily attracts attention with its flowers. The flower of this violet, whose petals reach 7 cm in size, really resembles a rose in its outline.

The edges of the petals are bordered with green fringe. The petal itself can have shades from pink to lilac, with a wide white border along the edge.

Ice rose is one of the largest varieties of violets - the rosette can reach a diameter of 45 cm. The leaves, located on top of each other in several rows, have a bright green tint. Flower growers call this shade herbaceous. The edges of the leaves are wavy, the surface is quilted.

Variety RS – Ice Rose forms from 2 to 4 buds on one peduncle. Unlike other varieties, terry Saintpaulia has many petals arranged in several rows. Ordinary violets have only five petals.

Flowering is not grouped - the bud opens after the neighboring one has bloomed. The flower stalks are located directly on the leaves, bordering them with a charming wreath.

Magnificent violet Marble rose (S. Farbitnik)

Each plant is unique, and often even varieties of the same species are very different from each other.

When buying a new individual, it is important to know:

  • How to properly care for her;
  • What will she look like when she grows up?
  • And what surprises it can present to the owner.

Most Saintpaulias are similar to each other, but an individual approach to each of them guarantees an excellent result. In the article you will see a photo and description of Saintpaulia Marble Rose.

Marble rose is a violet of Usambor, genus Saintpaulia hybrid, family Gesneriev, class dicotyledonous, division flowering. The variety was bred by Sofia Farbitnik.

The rosette is standard size, about 25-28 cm in diameter. Sheets:

  • Very dark, green shade;
  • Glossy;
  • Round with a heart-shaped base.

Flowering is abundant, but gradual. There are usually a lot of flower stalks, and there are also buds on them, but before the next flower opens, the previous one begins to fade.

The color is fancy, the flowers are double and semi-double. The main tone is white and pink with a crimson-red marble pattern.

The size of the flowers is large, up to 7 cm, but the more abundant the flowering, the smaller they are.

The variety is resistant to difficult conditions, and even in the heat it blooms successfully, producing 2-3 peduncles with a bunch of buds. The variety is not slow to grow, but the young plant requires attention.

Attention! The first flowering is usually sparse and reaches its maximum bloom at least by the third time.

Caring for a plant at home

In matters of care, the Marble Rose is not demanding. Flowering responds to certain maintenance parameters by changing the size and color of flowers.

For good flowering, the variety requires proper care.

Transplantation, pruning, rejuvenation

Young plants are regularly replanted; as they grow, they are usually simply transferred to a larger pot. Adult Saintpaulias are usually replanted once a year, with a complete replacement of the soil.

Saintpaulias need to be replanted once a year.

When replanting adult flowers, they are usually pruned and rejuvenated. First of all, remove the old ones:

  • Leaves;
  • Peduncles;
  • And roots.

Leaves and peduncles are trimmed as needed, regardless of transplantation. If the rosette has aged or the stem has become very long, it is cut off by removing the lower part. If roots remain on the rosette, it is simply replanted, and if pruning occurs high, then the top is first rooted.

Home care

Considering the external affiliation of both varieties to industrial ones, they are identical in care requirements and are unpretentious.

Conditions of detention

When choosing a place to place a flowerpot, you need to take into account some requirements:

  1. The lighting should be bright, but without direct sunlight. Saintpaulia easily gets burned when the sun hits the leaves, and even the reflection of sunlight from snow in winter can lead to burns;
  2. The temperature in winter should not fall below 16°, and in summer rise above 26°;
  3. The recommended air humidity is 60%, while in the summer heat it is better to increase this figure slightly, and in winter to reduce it.

Attention! For this variety it is better to stick to a slightly lower temperature, this gives a chance to get a clear white border in Winter Rose and a more saturated color in Optimara

Watering, fertilizing

The plant responds well to wick watering, while with classic watering it grows more slowly and the rosette is more compact:

  1. Classic watering - water is poured into a tray or under the leaves (avoiding contact with the leaves and the growing point). The frequency of watering depends on the season - in the summer about once a week, and in the winter a little less often;
  2. Wick - water is constantly in a container under the pot and a wick is lowered into it through the drainage hole. The plant independently regulates the amount of moisture it needs.

Mineral fertilizers are applied regularly; their dosage and frequency of fertilizing depend on the type of irrigation:

  • For the first, the procedure is carried out through watering (about once every two weeks in the summer, and a little less often in the winter), the dosage is equal to half of the recommended;
  • For the second, the fertilizer is constantly diluted in water, and the dosage is reduced by 7-8 times from the instructions.

Transplantation and rejuvenation

The rosette is replanted more often in the first 1.5-2 years of life, when the bush is growing and regularly needs to change the size of the pot. Subsequent transplants are performed for:

Violets can be replanted once a year.

  • Substrate replacement;
  • Depressions of a bare stem;
  • And bush rejuvenation.

Methods for transplanting Saintpaulia:

  1. When transplanting at an age, the rosette is simply transferred to a new flowerpot and covered with new soil;
  2. When completely replacing the soil, the procedure is more complicated:
      The plant is taken out of the pot and the old substrate is completely shaken off;
  3. Clean the root system from old, damaged roots;
  4. A new substrate is poured into the pot and the plant is planted in the center of the pot.
  5. To rejuvenate and deepen the rosette, the rosette is replanted as in the previous version, but the procedure of pruning the leaves is added, they are cut quite high and the stem is deepened (if necessary, the stem is shortened from below.

In addition to pruning for rejuvenation, it is also carried out for hygiene purposes. In this case, remove old leaves and peduncles as necessary.

The soil for Saintpaulia is made up depending on the type of irrigation:

  • For the classic one, take peat, soil and perlite in equal parts and add 0.3 moss;
  • For the wick, only peat and perlite are used in equal parts.

Reproduction

The absence of a chimeric pattern on the flowers and variegation on the leaves allows the variety to be propagated by any known method:

  1. Leaf - cuttings are taken from 2-3 rows, rooted in a convenient way (in water, soil or moss), after the children appear, they are grown and planted. Further care is identical to that of adult plants;
  2. Stepson - it can be planted grown, with its roots, or cut and rooted using one of the methods for rooting leaf cuttings;
    Most often, Saintpaulias are propagated by leaves.
  3. Peduncle - a difficult method, used very rarely; for it, a fresh peduncle is rooted in the soil under the film;
  4. By seeds - new varieties are often bred using this method, but for propagation this method is too unstable in terms of transferring maternal data.

Growing rules

In order for a violet to produce many buds and ovaries every month, it is necessary to create comfortable conditions for it.

Caring for the RS variety - Ice Rose is practically no different from that of other varieties, with the exception of a couple of points.

Selecting a location

Like any violet, Ice Rose loves light very much . The northwest and northeast windows are especially suitable for growing. On a south window, violet leaves will get severe burns.

In late autumn and winter, when daylight hours are shortened, artificial lighting can be done with fluorescent lamps.

Choosing a pot

For active flowering, the pot should not be large.

Growing in a large pot, the violet spends all its energy on developing the root system.

In this case, there can be no talk of flowering. The size of the pot can be determined by dividing the measured diameter of the rosette by three.

The most suitable pot for an adult plant is 9x9. For young people, 5x5 and 7x7 pots are suitable.

Soil selection

Violet Ice Rose is most suitable for loose, breathable soil that can retain moisture well. The following composition is considered optimal:

  • Chernozem soil. It is best to collect it in a forest, for example in a pine forest. This soil contains many impurities useful for violets. To disinfect, such soil is heated in the oven for an hour. Violet does not grow in black soil taken from garden beds;
  • Peat taken from the upper layers;
  • Vermiculite/perlite;
  • Coconut fiber;
  • Charcoal;
  • The soil acidity required is average - from 5 to 5.5 pH.

If it is not possible to make the substrate yourself, you can purchase a special soil for violets at a flower shop.

If you collect varietal violets, we advise you to read materials about Saintpaulias “Raisin”, “Galaxy Dance” and “Chimera”.

Watering

Violet does not accept traditional watering from above. This can cause the development of diseases and rotting of leaves.

The most suitable is watering in trays or wick watering . Water should not be left in the tray for more than 15 minutes to avoid root rot.

Temperature

The most sensitive point in growing the Ice Rose variety is maintaining the desired air temperature.

With sudden changes in this indicator, the color of the petals may change.

The most comfortable indicator is considered to be +20°C. The permissible growth limit is from +18°C to +24°C.

If it is exceeded, the flowering and growth of violets may stop. For other reasons for slower development, read the material “Why violets don’t bloom.”

If the surrounding air is warmed up less than +18°C, diseases of the root system may begin due to hypothermia.

Similar care is required for other varietal violets - “Wedding Bouquet”, “Duchess” and “Royal Lace”.

Feeding

An important element is the timely application of fertilizers. Nitrogen is needed for the growth of leaves and flower stalks, and phosphorus and potassium for flowering.

To improve coloring, manganese, calcium, copper and other trace elements are needed. Ice rose responds well to the application of complex mineral fertilizers, which contain all of the above elements.

Feeding varietal violets is unacceptable at elevated temperatures in the room, especially when the leaves are exposed to direct sunlight.

Fertilizers are applied only to moist soil. This procedure is most often combined with watering. The schedule and application rates are indicated in the instructions for use of the drugs. It is important to avoid overdose - this can have a detrimental effect on the plant.

Watering

Violet Fairy - description and characteristics of the variety

To water violets use settled warm water. To water the RS-Ice Rose violet, you can use several methods.

Top watering

Most often used. The earthen lump is moistened from above, using a watering can or bottle with a narrow neck. Excess water is drained from the pan.

Top watering

Bottom watering

This method is carried out by filling a tray with water and leaving the pot in the water for 20-30 minutes. Then the water is drained.

Wick method

It consists of threading a cord (wick) through the drainage hole of the pot. In this case, part of the cord is in a pot, in the soil substrate, and the remaining part is immersed in a container of water. As a result of the capillary effect, moisture rises through the wick to the roots of the plant.

Using mats

The method of moisturizing with mats is quite simple. Capillary mats made of synthetic material, covered with a film with holes, are placed in a wide container. This system accumulates and then gradually releases moisture to the plants.

Reproduction

Varietal characteristics are preserved only if violets are propagated by cuttings and peduncles.

For propagation, the healthiest and strongest one is selected from the second row of rosette leaves.

It is placed in a glass of warm boiled water.

When the root system grows 1 cm, this cutting is planted in the prepared substrate.

Can be planted directly into the ground. The cuttings are buried a third of their length. This will facilitate the development of the root system and the appearance of lateral shoots - children. To avoid excessive evaporation of moisture, while the root system is not sufficiently developed, seedlings are kept in greenhouse conditions.

To do this, containers with leaves are covered with plastic wrap or a glass jar. To remove excess condensation, ventilation is carried out in the evenings.

To prevent the seedlings from drying out, moderate watering is carried out.

The best method for propagating varietal violets is considered to be growing a new plant from a peduncle. Only a healthy peduncle is selected. It is broken off at the base and planted in a small container with prepared soil. It is necessary to deepen it to two-thirds of the length of the peduncle.

Further care is no different from caring for seedlings from cuttings. For other ways to obtain a new plant, read the material “Methods of propagating violets.”

Soil preparation

Violet prefers fertile soil. The soil should be light and well permeable to air. From a purchased mixture, we can recommend Terravita soil - it does not cake, does not clump, and contains all the nutrients for the normal development of the plant. To increase the breathability of the soil, you will need to add perlite or vermiculite to Terravita. Both leavening agents have worked well, but perlite, white granules, provides lightness and airiness to the soil. In such soil, violets grow by leaps and bounds. Vermiculite “settles” faster, that is, it mixes with the soil, which affects the looseness of the soil.

How to form a bush correctly

As the Ice Rose variety ages, not only does the rosette grow, but the central trunk also lengthens, the flowers become smaller and are externally separated from the leaves. Stepchildren are growing.

All this leads to the flower losing its shape and former attractiveness.

To prevent this from happening, you need to carry out the rejuvenation procedure on time . To do this, the upper part of the rosette is cut off and rooted in water or soil. When a new root system grows, the violet is transplanted into new soil.

If the violet is not yet that old, the rejuvenation procedure includes the following measures :

  • Removing faded buds.
  • Removing old and missing leaves. Often, when the rest are growing well, all the lower leaves are cut off.
  • Removal of lateral processes - stepsons.
  • For uniform growth of a flower, it is periodically necessary to change its place of growth or about once a month to turn it with different sides to the sun.

The sixth winter in the Ice Rose Castle. Chapter 1

When the familiar tower emerged from the tangled tangle of bare branches of the sleeping winter forest, my heart sank in my chest. I thought that I had almost forgotten everything during these seven years - but the closer the Ice Rose Castle became, the brighter and more vivid the images of an elusive childhood appeared before my eyes. Pranks and pranks, insults and small victories, the first real trials and the first real tears... And friendship - I then also believed that it was real.

And in the center of this cycle, like the axis around which all my memories revolve, is a tall black figure. The outlines are blurry. I suddenly suddenly realize that I almost don’t remember the face of a person whose name for a long time I simply forbade myself to say, even mentally. I'm trying to remember, but his image stubbornly eludes me. Still, seven years is a long time for the child I once was.

The Ice Rose Castle was getting closer and closer, and at the same time my nervousness was growing.

No, I honestly tried! Ignore the panic that erupted in an uncontrollable wave. Heaven, what am I doing! Where am I going? For what? Why reopen these wounds?

Suddenly, very vividly and in colors, I imagined how everything would be - a huge, enormous castle, crowds of dressed-up guests... and in the midst of all this splendor - one lost me. No, I’m still more accustomed to silence and loneliness. I have no idea how to find my place where I’m probably already…

“Dad, what if they’ve all already forgotten me?..” I can’t hold back and turn to him, almost flying off the bench from this movement - and so I sat on the very edge.

My father looks at me warmly and understandingly. And she answers - it seems that it’s not the question that I asked, but the one that I actually wanted to ask. Shakes his head.

- No, Katie! He hasn't forgotten you. Look out the window.

...Silver flashed between the trees. Then again and again.

Rider on a snow deer.

Dressed in black, he bends down to the very neck of the mighty, beautiful animal, and both of them seem like an arrow rushing through the wilds across the wind, scattering snow sparks. An arrow shot from my half-forgotten past into the present.

The silvery flash is lost from sight, but I know that our paths will soon cross.

At the entrance to the castle fence, a strange detail caught my eye, which absolutely certainly did not exist seven years ago. On both sides of the road, perpendicular to it, there is a long earthen rampart a fathom high. I didn’t see the edges - they were lost in the thicket of the forest, which here, so close to the Ice Rose Castle, was completely free of snow. Sloping, overgrown with grass and moss in places, cracked here and there - the shaft looked as if a giant underground snake was lying across my path, and it was about to wake up and begin to climb out.

I’ll have to remember to ask what else this is from... someone. I'll ask someone at the castle about it. Yes, at least from old Thornwood - I hope he is in good health and still serves as the Winterstones' butler.

The closer I was to the source of my anxiety, the brighter and more fully my childhood memories came to life in my memory, and the more differences I found. It would seem that they were not so significant, but they sharply reminded me how much time I had lost.

The castle has hardly changed, except that its stone has become very pale gray, almost white - like a rain cloud that has already cried out almost all its grievances and is preparing to become a frivolous cloud. And roses - my wonderful blue roses had already climbed up to the very tower and covered part of the wall with a thick carpet. Impatient green fingers are about to stretch out into that treasured window, tightly closed with shutters, behind which lies a still unsolved mystery.

Around the castle, much more unusual things awaited me.

Instead of the openwork cast-iron fence that once surrounded the garden, there is a high wall of white brick, with sharp peaks sticking out from the top. Heavy oak gates bound with strips of steel. True, they are wide open, and our carriage passes without a single hitch, but on the right we found a small, squat room, most reminiscent of a guardhouse. When two people in cuirasses and with halberds came out, I realized that it was she.

They didn’t ask us anything and bowed briefly. The guard's armor bears the Winterstones' coat of arms - a blue rose in a silver circle.

So, what is it that appeared there in the distance, next to the outbuildings? Isn't it a two-story barracks for an hour, judging by the armed people entering and leaving it?

Interesting information about the variety

The dependence of the shape and color of flowers on the ambient temperature is very interesting.

At +20°C there are no cherry spots on the flower petals.

They remain white with green fringe around the edges.

When this indicator increases to +26°C, the cherry color begins to predominate, and the green edging disappears completely.

Each new flowering remains unpredictable, which gives the opportunity to experiment with coloring.

Not always during reproduction, children grown by the cutting method can inherit the characteristics of the mother violet. The resulting Ice Rose has an uncharacteristic color of a different color with a constant green fringe along the edges.

Breeders call such violets sports . In sports, the buds are more developed, flowering takes longer, but they are not suitable for further reproduction.

In their beauty, sports are not inferior to mother plants and can become a worthy addition to a gardener’s collection.

Shrub transplantation

The violet should be replanted 2 times a year, while changing the soil mixture.
This procedure has a beneficial effect on the development of the plant and the abundance of flowering. Useful microelements in the substrate will help the bush regain its strength. The ideal period for work is considered to be the whole autumn, as well as the time from February to March. Professional flower growers note that replanting is carried out to form new roots, since the root system of such plants often needs to be updated due to rapid aging. During the replanting process, the violet is cleaned of old foliage and damaged roots. The formation of new roots will lead to the fact that the plant will begin to form strong flower stalks with a large number of buds and fresh leaves. It is allowed to replant during the flowering period. If you do the work carefully, there will be no harm to the bush.

What can harm varietal Saintpaulia

Varietal violets are most susceptible to pests.

  • Ticks These pests cannot be seen with the naked eye. They settle on aging leaves. Their vital activity is characterized by the appearance of white dots on the leaves. For prevention, these sheets need to be cut off.
  • Thrips . Insects, which can only be seen under a microscope, can fly. Indoor plants usually end up with pollen from outdoor plants and poplar fluff.
  • Aphid . The activity of these insects is detrimental to violets. Characterized by the appearance of cobwebs on the leaves. Later they turn yellow and disappear.

To combat insect pests, there are special preparations - insecticides, which are sold in specialized stores.

Despite the “cooling” name, the appearance of the violet variety RS - Ice Rose evokes warm emotions. With proper care, the violet will reciprocate and bloom with new buds for many years.

Pests

The violet can be attacked by harmful insects that are not averse to feasting on the leaves and juices of the plant. Let's get acquainted with the most dangerous pests for Saintpaulia ice rose.

Spider mite

A very small insect that leaves behind barely noticeable white webs on the foliage. Pests are removed manually, and if there are many of them, the flower is treated with insecticide.

Thrips

Miniature parasites that can fly from flower to flower. Therefore, when a violet is infected with thrips, the first thing to do is immediately isolate the diseased plant from other indoor flowers. Treatment is carried out only with an insecticide: Fitoverm is optimal.

Aphid

Often this pest gets onto violets from cut flowers brought from the street. To prevent infection, do not place a vase with a cut bouquet close to a pot of Saintpaulia. And to cope with aphids, you will need several insecticidal treatments.

Keep in mind that when spraying, be sure to turn the leaves and treat their undersides. Aphids settle in such secluded places.

Transplanting an adult plant

It is recommended to replant violets older than 1 year once every two years. Planned replanting is carried out to replace depleted soil with fresh and nutritious soil. Within a year or two, the soil in the pot is not only depleted, but also caked. Looseness is lost, air exchange deteriorates, and the root system does not receive enough oxygen. The flower is moved before watering. Dried substrate is easier to shake off the roots. The lower part of the root system is cut off, and several lower leaves are also removed.

For an adult plant, you do not need to take a pot of a larger diameter; after removing the roots, it will fit in a container of the usual size. The substrate should be loose and moist, the soil should be poured up to the lower leaves. There is no need to compact it. Growing roots need a lot of air

For the first two weeks, water the plant with extreme caution, trying not to over-water it. You can put it in a greenhouse. In a month, the violet will take root in a new place and produce new leaves and flower stalks.

In a month, the violet will take root in a new place and produce new leaves and flower stalks.

Measures for caring for indoor flowers include disease prevention. They must be inspected regularly and dry leaves removed. New violets must be quarantined for a month. Pests can enter the premises from the street: spider mites, thrips. To combat them, special drugs are used.

The Ice Rose violet can often be seen at exhibitions. It attracts visitors with its unusually beautiful double flowers. Having bought a leaf or a baby from a varietal plant, you can grow a luxurious Saintpaulia yourself to decorate your interior.

Ice rose loves diffused sunlight, preferring eastern or south-eastern window sills so that there is a lot of light, but direct sunlight does not leave burns on its leaves. On the northern side, with a clear lack of light, flowering will be more than modest. The only way out is to organize additional lighting. You need to choose a lamp with white cold light and place it at a height of 20 cm above the plant. The same thing will have to be done in winter if you want to admire the blooms all year round, because if there is a lack of light, the violet will not please you with flowers.

Violets feel normal at temperatures from +16 to +28 degrees, but to bloom they need a range from +20 to +26 degrees. When the air temperature is too low, they stop growing, and in extreme heat they begin to dry out or wither.

Plants should be watered as needed, when the top third of the soil dries out. The frequency of watering depends on the time of year, air temperature, age of the violets, and the size of the pot, so it is better to check the condition of the soil. For irrigation, use only soft, clean water no cooler than the air, maybe even a couple of degrees warmer.

For comfortable growth of Saintpaulia, an air humidity of at least 50–60% is needed. In extreme heat or when heating devices are on, the humidity around the plant is increased using a tray with wet pebbles or moss, on which a pot with a stand is placed. You can simply hang a wet towel on a nearby central heating radiator or spray the air around the flower so that the droplets do not fall on it.

The Ice Rose is replanted after 2 years using the transshipment method, being careful not to damage the roots. The pot can be made of any material, its size is important. If it is too large, the roots will grow intensively, but the violet will not bloom, and there will always be a risk of soil acidification. If the roots hit the walls and entwine the entire earthen ball, they won’t like it either. Usually the pot is chosen so that the leaves, after planting, extend half beyond its boundaries.

The soil should be slightly acidic, fertile and breathable. You can buy a universal one, and then add soil from under coniferous trees, coconut fiber or sphagnum moss, and crushed pine bark to it. You can buy soil for violets, but add more vermiculite to it for greater looseness.

Ice Rose responds well to feeding with Kemira Lux, but it needs to be diluted twice as much as indicated in the instructions.

Botanical description of the plant

These violets with beautiful frilly flowers were bred by Russian breeder Elena Lebetskaya. The flowers have a fairly large diameter - up to 5 cm, and they form a lush inflorescence in the form of a cap, shaped like a blossoming rosebud. Each flower shows a different shade of pink, which, combined with the petal tips (wavy, ribbed, smooth), gives the inflorescence a fantastic appearance.

The flowering of the Wind Rose can last throughout spring and summer - it depends on the care taken. The leaves of this violet are also special - they are large and wavy from the base of the leaf blade to its edge and have a dark green color. Wind rose has a tendency to lose varietal characteristics of flowers.

Did you know? The famous German poet Johann Goethe was a big fan of violets. While walking, he scattered the seeds of this plant in the vicinity of Weimar. Near this city you can still see fields of violets, which locals call “Goethe’s violets.”

With leaf propagation, traditional for violets, this species can produce monochromatic flowers - pink, red, crimson. An irregular violet is called a “sported” violet; its leaves can even be straight. But not all flower lovers throw away such plants, since some “sports” are not inferior in beauty to classic specimens.
