Let's look at the question - is it possible to water indoor plants with water from an aquarium?

Can it be used for irrigation?

The development of plants depends on the quality of water used for irrigation. Each type requires its own composition . This is determined by the conditions in which the crops develop (open or closed ground).

Indoor flowers

Houseplants need water free of heavy metals.
Therefore, taking it from open water bodies is not recommended. Another thing is the aquarium. There are no dangerous bacteria in the restricted, protected biome.

There will be no rotting products there if the aquarium is looked after. Therefore, water from a glass pond is suitable for watering indoor flowers.

Seedling

The requirements for watering seedlings are equivalent to those for house plants. Seedlings need:

  • clean,
  • soft,
  • oxygenated water at room temperature.

If you do not start a pond with fish, use filters; the water drained during replacement is suitable for watering seedlings.

Vegetable garden

Crops adapted for cultivation in open ground adequately perceive:

  • rain water,
  • from wells,
  • wells,
  • water supply

Although it contains a high content of salts, harmful chemicals, and other impurities. In this case, aquarium water with a soft structure is much more useful for garden plants.

Benefit or harm?

The water of the aquarium is inhabited by microorganisms that maintain the biological balance of the environment. They process urea (a waste product of fish) into nitrates. As a result, water turns into a useful substrate of organic origin.

Indoor flowers

The chemical composition of water drained from the aquarium has a beneficial effect on the development of house plants, being at the same time a multicomponent fertilizer:

  • promotes the growth of indoor flowers;
  • improves the process of energy exchange;
  • increases plant immunity;
  • provides high-quality feeding.

Indoor flowers respond well not only to watering - you can spray the leaves with aquarium water.

But if the water has been in the aquarium for a long time without being replaced, it becomes hard. Using it for watering can only harm the flowers:

  • plants will not receive enough nutrients;
  • development processes are disrupted;
  • roots suffer from “old” water;
  • leaves turn yellow; the flowers fade.

Some gardeners note that guano drained from the aquarium along with water is also beneficial for indoor plants.

Seedling

If biological balance is maintained in a home pond, water taken from the aquarium along with fish waste will be useful when growing seedlings.

  1. The composition of this water is identical to lake silt, which makes it a good fertilizer for seedlings.

  2. Phosphorus , which is part of water, activates metabolic processes.
  3. The complex of mineral elements allows you to support photosynthesis and respiratory functions of plants.
  4. Beneficial microorganisms , entering the soil with water, enrich it with oxygen.

All this has a beneficial effect on the growth of seedlings. The seedlings are strong and adapt more easily when transferred to open ground.

Despite the obvious benefits of aquarium water , problems are also possible when using it:

  • frequent watering with such water will lead to an overabundance of useful substances and will “force” the seedlings to fatten, delaying the time of budding;
  • when using unfiltered water, the percentage of urea increases, which affects the seedlings by yellowing of the leaf blade;
  • Watering with stagnant water disrupts the development of sprouts.

Gardeners who grow seedlings on their own believe that watering with aquarium water is a good preventive measure that prevents the development of fungal diseases.

Vegetable garden

Aquarium water with a low content of ammonia and nitrites, but with a sufficient amount of nitrates, is beneficial for vegetable crops:

  • they are actively growing;
  • delight summer residents with lush flowering;
  • give high yields.

But watering with such water can also cause the death of plants. If the aquarium has not been cleaned for a long time, food debris accumulates in it, which gradually rots.

As a result, water will lead to the following problems in the garden:

  • pyogenic bacteria , once in the soil, actively multiply there, infecting crops with fungal diseases;

  • the balance of microflora is disturbed - beneficial organisms are suppressed by pathogenic ones;
  • vegetable crops weaken , losing their ability to resist pests, which leads to a decrease in yield.

Nitrates contained in aquarium water are pure organic matter produced by fish and processed by bacteria.

Experienced gardeners note in reviews on the forum that the nitrates contained in aquarium water are beneficial to vegetable crops and harmless to people who eat the harvested crops.

Composition and characteristics of aquarium water

If you are wondering whether it is possible to water indoor flowers with waste, settled and even contaminated water, the answer will be positive. But this should not be done with any liquid, but with the one that is drained from the aquarium.

At first glance, such water is not suitable: it contains algae and fish feces, but it is precisely due to the presence of microorganisms and chemicals in it that sufficient nutrition is ensured for the plantings.

A filter is a must-have element in an aquarium. It affects the microflora: it provides suitable conditions for beneficial microorganisms. Thanks to it, the water is saturated with oxygen, due to this, fish can live in the aquarium, algae and bacteria can grow.

If you turn off the filter element for several hours, all living things will die. That is, when this element is not installed, you should not use liquid for irrigation. It will not contain useful substances, because there are no microorganisms.

The liquid that is drained from the aquarium does not contain chlorine. It is suitable for watering because it is at room temperature. The composition includes phosphorus, this element is involved in the construction of cells, which promotes growth. It affects the process of energy exchange.

With the participation of phosphorus, metabolism is activated, photosynthesis, respiratory function, and the fermentation process are supported. Without this element, the soil becomes poorer, plants do not receive enough nutrients, and the process of flora development is disrupted.

Is it beneficial to water flowers with aquarium water?

Watering with aquarium water. If the water in the aquarium is periodically partially replaced (and not simply topped up, replenishing the evaporated water: in this case, the hardness of the water gradually increases), then no matter what part of it you take, any part of it is suitable for watering indoor plants. And although microscopic algae live in this water and waste products of aquatic plants, fish and snails, and uneaten food remains are dissolved (or simply float), they are not a hindrance to indoor plants. On the contrary, such watering of indoor flowers acts as a weak fertilizing and the cloudy one from the bottom contains even more nutrients than the “thin” one, transparent from the top.

After such watering, the result is visible - violets bloom constantly, some grass that had not bloomed for 3 years began to throw 3 flowers at a time. The water drained from the aquarium during changes is used to water seedlings for the garden (tomatoes, peppers, flowers, etc.). It turns out well and everything is growing wonderfully. For those who have hard water, and when watering even with settled water, the soil of potted plants quickly deteriorates and becomes covered with salts. When watering an aquarium - whether after a siphon, or simply drained - (I almost never siphon the soil, I have a very dense planting of plants in my aquariums) - the soil in the pots can not be changed for several years. The healthy dark green foliage is pleasing; they actually bloom more often (phosphorus).

Aquarium water is not magic, after a single watering of which the violets will be transformed. Therefore, if you decide to water your violets with this water, then you will have to have an aquarium at home. There are a lot of processes going on in aquarium water that make the water practically alive. It contains a lot of beneficial microorganisms that are responsible for the biobalance in the aquarium. A prerequisite for maintaining a good aquarium is the presence of an external or internal filter, in which billions of such microorganisms settle over time. Turning off the filter for two hours leads to the death of these organisms and an imbalance. Sometimes, after a long power outage, fish died from poisoning by these dead biofilters. So, the water in the aquarium is essentially a micro-elixir for irrigation.

How to water plants with aquarium water

Irregular, infrequent watering will not provide the required result. Plants will begin to develop better if you constantly fertilize them with liquid from the aquarium. However, you should not overwater the flowers. From excess moisture, even if there are a large number of useful components, they can die. The watering mode does not change.

The only difference is the liquid used and the sequence of actions:

  1. Prepare the hose. It may be short, but then you will have to move the liquid: first it is drained from the aquarium into containers, then carried to the flowerpots with plants. If you use a long hose, you can water the flowers directly from the aquarium. This requires less effort and saves time.
  2. One end of the tube is lowered into the aquarium, and the other is drained. The free end of the hose is placed in the mouth, inhaled, and the water begins to drain.
  3. The liquid is used for irrigation in most cases no more than once a week. However, the frequency of fertilizing plants depends on their type.
  4. If there is a significant layer of sediment in the liquid, then the grounds should not be used in their pure form often. It is diluted and then used.

There are many advantages to this method of watering and fertilizing plants; there is only one drawback - the presence of midges, which appear if the soil is saturated with organic matter and well moistened.

Is it possible to water flowers with water from an aquarium?

I heard somewhere that aquarium water is good for flowers. Is this really true? There’s just an aquarium in the office, and we still do a partial water change once a week. I think maybe we shouldn’t just throw it out?

I think nothing bad will happen. Settled water with microorganisms. My friend has an aquarium and she waters it often. He says that the flowers have begun to bloom well, especially the violets.

Of course it is possible, even necessary. Aquarium water is rich in various microelements, provided you have algae growing there. But even if they are not there, this water will be better than the one that flows directly from the tap, since it has settled and harmful compounds have evaporated from it.

I always water it with aquarium water, why are you so rude about it... This water is very beneficial for the plants! When I completely change the water in the aquarium, I pour all the last water (with fish waste) into flowerpots; organic matter, in my opinion, is an excellent fertilizer!

I agree that it will be a good fertilizer.

And no one seems to bother here. just discussing the topic.

I don't think you can harm the flowers this way. The most important thing is not to water the flowers with water that has been purified through a filter.

I also agree that water from an aquarium is good for irrigation, but only if it has not “bloomed”, because such water can only cause harm.

Why bother? Go ahead and plant your precious flowers in the aquarium, then you won’t even have to think about watering. This is the first time I’ve heard such a crazy idea about watering; I don’t even know what to compare such an innovation with. Except with idiocy. May the author of the topic forgive me.

Why is this a crazy idea? Aquarium water is often used to water plants. Flowers grow better this way. But I don’t advise you to neglect the rules of watering and not to overwater indoor plants, otherwise chlorosis will begin in them.

Something so rude is idiotic. I water all the flowers at work with water from the aquarium when it’s time to clean it, so as not to carry this water through a long corridor and pour it into the toilet. And the flowers are a sight to behold. True, we most often carry out this procedure on Friday evening, before leaving work, so that the smell disappears.

I know that the proximity of an aquarium and indoor plants in the same room has a beneficial effect on the latter. An aquarium, or rather the water that is in it, allows you to create the necessary humidity in the room, which is very necessary for many plants. But I’ve never heard of using this water to water it. Although I suspect that it is quite possible. This water most likely contains many useful substances dissolved.

Of course, you can also water it with aquarium water, as they wrote here, unless it has bloomed. Houseplants need to be watered with settled water, but the aquarium contains just such water. Why can't you water with filtered water?

I have a friend who waters it all the time. You just need to look, if anyone has sea fish, then the water should be salty. And salty plants should not be watered.

I’ve never watered from an aquarium and I don’t think it’s worth it; after all, fish food and their waste float there. Why do flowers need this?

  • Login or register to leave comments

Sometimes I water it with water from the aquarium, especially when there is no settled water. I read about it and I can say that there will definitely be no harm. Flowers benefit from the flora that forms there as a result of the vital activity of fish.

This water is very useful. There is no chlorine in it, it is at room temperature and, most importantly, there are tiny microorganisms that provide food for plants. After such water, you won’t even need different fertilizers. Aquarium water is a little similar to river water, but previously the best water for irrigation was river water.
