Surf Song orchid - description, care rules, plant replanting

Surf Song orchid – variety description

Phalaenopsis Surf Song has green leaves reaching 10-30 cm in length, collected in a rosette from which grow light, airy green-silver roots and 60-70 cm peduncles strewn with flowers that look like fluttering butterflies.

Among the characteristics of this variety, it is worth paying special attention to the colors of the flowers. The petals seem to be painted with orange streaks, the lower ones are also decorated with red dots. The lip is crimson with a shiny white center. On the reverse side is a flower of a single yellow-green color. The buds bloom alternately, so flowering lasts longer and can last for two months.

What kind of flower is this?

This color of orchid really exists . And its shade variety is great. Shades vary from dark yellow with a slight orange tint to almost scarlet. There are varieties whose inflorescences are colored in orange tones with fragments of pink or red, for example, a contrastingly colored lip of the flower.

This color palette is not the prerogative of any one variety. Thanks to selective breeding, many varieties of orchids have been developed, the list of colors of which includes an orange tone. The most popular types of orchids that have been bred to produce orange flowers are:

  • Phalaenopsis.
  • Wanda.
  • Brassada.
  • Ascocenda.

When purchasing a plant, you should be aware of unscrupulous florists who color flowers with a syringe.

Important! When purchasing an orchid of a rare color, make sure that there are no puncture marks under the leaves, on the peduncle or neck of the flower, and that the roots have a natural, green-silver color.

Description of buds with photo

The most notable feature of this variety is its flowers: the color of the front part of the petals ranges from orange-yellow to pinkish-coral depending on growing conditions and lighting, but their reverse side always maintains a uniform yellow tint, reminiscent of mango pulp. The lip is painted a rich fuchsia color, and the column is white.

receiving point. For lying, that the organizer is intimidating her. For threatening the courts and for really boorish communication. She did not provide evidence that she was right. However, the moderators accommodated her and allowed her to return the delicate plant to the other end of the city, so that the lady would not overwhelm everyone with threats of lawsuits and hysterics. The orchid was just stuck in the bag. And if the return had been received immediately, then everything would have been ok with the plant. Considering the fact that the participant is able to pick up an order from the point for which she did not pay, for repeated non-payment to other organizations, I very much doubt that the plant is ours in principle! The photos don't look like our flower at all. She returned some kind of disheveled broom. They returned the money to her without looking, only because they wanted to stop this circus and not waste time. But only.

You can look at the Brother Sara Gold orchid in this video:

Wanda Natcha Tangelo

The plant is tall. It grows from 60 cm to 1.5 meters, taking into account the roots hanging down like a beard.

Brassada Orange Delight

Brassada as a species is distinguished by its unusual, long and narrow petals . Orange Delight is a bright, yellow-orange hybrid with dense patches of dark, red-orange. The inflorescences themselves are large, up to 9 cm, the peduncle rises to a height of up to 40 centimeters.

Next is a video about the Brassada Orange Delight orchid:

Ascocenda Yip Sum Wah

Ascocenda is a hybrid species. The Yip Sum Wah variety has a moderately bright, evenly distributed orange hue. The flowers are small enough for an orchid, 3.5 - 5.5 centimeters. It is distinguished by its abundant flowering even among orchids - 25 - 30 inflorescences fit on one peduncle. The plant reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters.

The history of the orchid

Phalaenopsis Surf Song was developed in 2004 by John Miller and is a cross between Taipei Gold and King Shiang's Rose.

The coloring of the buds of this orchid reminded its creator of the sun rising above the surface of the sea, which was reflected in the choice of name. Surf Song is translated into Russian as “surf song”.

    Home care rules

    Phalaenopsis Surf Song is a tropical plant, so it loves warmth. The optimal air temperature for keeping it is +22-30 degrees during the daytime and +16 at night. However, sudden temperature changes should not be allowed. In the hot season, when the temperature can rise above +35 degrees, the flower should be moved to a cooler place. The plant also needs constant ventilation and is afraid of drafts.

    In the room with the orchid, it is necessary to provide high air humidity and bright lighting. In winter, when daylight is quite short, you should resort to the use of artificial light devices and maintain lighting for 12 hours. In summer, the flower should not be exposed to direct rays of the sun, which can burn the delicate petals and leaves.

    You need to water the flower generously on the substrate or by immersing it in a container of water. In summer, watering is carried out once every 4-5 days, in winter it is reduced to once every 7-10 days. During watering, water should not be allowed to get into the leaf sinuses to prevent rotting. The orchid should be watered with well-settled or boiled water at room temperature.

    Phalaenopsis Surf Song is fertilized with liquid mineral preparations designed specifically for orchids. Fertilizers are applied every third or fourth watering with an interval of 15 days.

    Replanting is carried out every 2-3 years or when the root system becomes crowded in the pot. It is recommended to replant only purchased plants 2 weeks after purchase. To do this you need:

    • prepare a new pot, 2 cm larger than the old one. For orchids, it is recommended to use transparent pots with side drainage holes;
    • purchase a substrate intended for orchids or prepare it yourself by mixing charcoal, sphagnum moss and pieces of pine bark;
    • carefully remove the phalaenopsis from the old container, clean the roots, remove rotten and damaged roots, as well as yellow leaves;
    • Treat the cut areas with an antiseptic;
    • dry the plant well;
    • the next day, prepare a new pot by placing drainage and substrate in it;
    • Place the orchid in it and cover it with prepared soil mixture.

    After transplantation, provide the phalaenopsis with normal care.

    It is difficult to propagate the Surf Song orchid variety at home. To do this, two methods are used: dividing the main rosette and propagating by children.

    Rules of care

    Caring for an orchid should correspond to the species to which the plant belongs.

    1. Phalaenopsis are planted on a substrate made from a mixture of bark and sphagnum moss .
      Keep the plant on the windowsill on the west or east side. The minimum permissible temperature in winter is + 14 degrees. Summer temperatures should range from + 24 to + 30 degrees. It needs abundant watering on a completely dried substrate, and in the summer - additionally and frequent spraying. The flower is propagated vegetatively by cutting off the young shoot on the peduncles. This shoot should be replanted separately after roots appear.
    2. It is preferable to keep Vanda in hanging baskets. Watering the Vanda orchid depends on where the plant is kept. If Vanda is kept on a substrate, this substrate is watered abundantly after it has completely dried out. Plants in glass vases are given regular baths with the roots immersed in water for 20 minutes. After which the water is drained.
      An orchid requires daily temperature changes, maintaining daytime temperatures within + 20 + 25 degrees, and air humidity at 60 - 80%. Requires 12 to 14 hours of diffused sunlight.

      Important! The roots of the Vanda orchid cannot be covered, otherwise they will rot.

      Propagates vegetatively. At the base of the adult flower, daughter rosettes are formed. When these rosettes produce their own roots, they are separated and planted on a substrate made of a mixture of bark and sphagnum. After active formation of the root system, the flower is placed in a basket or glass vase with exposed roots, where it is kept.

    3. Brassada loves shade, humidity and coolness . Recommended temperature range is + 16 + 25 degrees with daily temperature changes. The plant is propagated by division, according to the same principle as Vandu. The plant should be kept on a substrate of bark and sphagnum.
    4. Ascocenda is kept with an open root system on the ground or block .
      Watered using the immersion method, the same type as Vanda. The plant requires twelve-hour lighting and strong temperature changes from + 16 to +27 degrees, with air humidity of 80%. The plant has a very sensitive root system, which is why replanting it is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Theoretically, it can reproduce according to the type of division, like Vanda, but lateral processes appear extremely rarely. More often, the plant is propagated by apical cuttings, which does not always end in success.

    Home care rules

    Conditions of detention

    • Determine the location for the plant : Temperature close to natural conditions. 23-30 degrees during the day . The temperature difference should not be more than 4-6 degrees;

    • They should be illuminated for 14-16 hours;
    • should not be exposed to direct sunlight !

    Watering and fertilizing

    • They love moisture . But everything is in moderation. Without stagnation of water and flooding;
    • There are known examples of growing phalaenopsis in Spartan conditions: with reduced amenities and watering. discarded peduncles with flowers instead of growing leaves ;
    • The approaches are well known. There is more moisture during the flowering period. During the rest period - less. Only once every 2 weeks ;

    Orchids are moisture-loving plants, but there must be moderation.

    Remember! You yourself determine the need for watering and fertilizing based on the condition of the soil and roots.

    • watering methods for each type.
    • Where - immersion of the pot in prepared water (melt, settled, warm);
    • Or maybe a shower;
    • But watch the flowers (they may be offended if the peace is disturbed). And behind the axils of the leaves, and the leaves themselves;
    • Fertilize together with watering (Kemira). But watch your concentration. Everyone advises to do it 2 times less than in the instructions for use;
    • Many people recommend using garlic infusions.

    Disease Prevention

    • But it’s not only diseases that need to be paid attention ;
    • What about pests? What do you know about them?
    • Since such a beauty has already appeared, please show her attention and care ;
    • Familiarize yourself with possible misfortunes. Learn their symptoms and countermeasures;
    • Purchase the necessary medications: And against pests (insecticides);
    • And against diseases (fungicides Fitosporin, Vectra, Skor).
  • Carry out preventive measures. To prevent their occurrence;
  • React promptly when you find them.
  • Pests and diseases

    Orange orchids face several threats. Among them:

    • insects;
    • viruses;
    • root rot;
    • bacterial lesions;
    • leaf damage due to improper care.

    Bacterial lesions can be localized by cutting off the damaged areas and smearing the cut area with iodine. In case of viral diseases, it is impossible to save the orchid; the plant will have to be destroyed to prevent infection of other flowers. Fungal infections are treated by treating with substances like Fundazol.

    Root rot can be eliminated by urgently pruning rotten areas, treating the roots with a disinfectant solution and replacing the substrate. Insects on an orchid are eliminated by treating the plant with special means and replacing the substrate.

    The orange orchid does not have any difficulties in care that are not typical for flowers of a more traditional color. There are both phalaenopsis that are quite feasible for beginners to grow, as well as more exotic and capricious varieties that require experience and special conditions from the gardener.

    Top dressing

    Feeding different types of orchids does not have any significant nuances and especially does not depend on their color. These plants need frequent feeding, every 2-3 waterings. This is done using special compounds that can be bought at any gardening store.

    You should not feed plants when:

    • transplant;
    • during the period of active flowering;
    • plant diseases;
    • during the rest period.
