Violet catalog with photo, name and description: 250+ varieties of homemade Saintpaulias

Saintpaulias are classified according to three main characteristics: flower, foliage and rosette. In this article we have collected for you the most popular varieties of violets with photos and names.

  1. Saintpaulia flowers are distinguished by color, shape, degree of doubleness (or number of petals) and the edge of the petal itself.
  2. The foliage of a flower can be ordinary or variegated, when the color of the leaves, in addition to green, contains inclusions of other colors. Also, Saintpaulia leaves vary in shape, degree of fluffiness, and type of surface.
  3. A rosette is a collection of leaves of a plant. It, in turn, is classified according to two criteria: size and type.

In this article we will talk in detail about each of the classification features and clearly show them in the photo.

Nuances of care

The presence of peculiarities in the color of leaf blades leads to the need to create slightly different growing conditions for Saintpaulias from the variegated group.

But with a careful study of the requirements of plants, growing them in home collections will not be difficult even for novice gardeners, and contemplation of the decorative properties of variegated leaves will bring real pleasure.

Lighting Features

All variegated Saintpaulias have a dual relationship to the illumination of the room.

Lack of light will negatively affect the general condition of violets , as it will make it more difficult for the process of photosynthesis, which in this group is already much slower.

The plant will receive less nutrients and starve . Also, low lighting of the violet can cause the loss of its variegated color.

Too bright a level of light supply can cause a decrease in the area of the variegated color and a change in the color scheme of the edging from light and white tones to pinkish, yellow and even bronze shades.

ATTENTION! These circumstances should be taken into account when equipping places with additional lighting - daylight spectrum lamps are best placed at some distance from the Saintpaulias.

Based on this, it is necessary to choose the location of the variegated violet of each variety through experimental selection : some varieties develop well on shelves, others bloom only on window sills.

In any case, violets require prolonged illumination with diffused rays - windows facing east and west are suitable for this.

On the window sills of northern windows, Saintpaulias need lighting , and southern windows with plants will have to be shaded during hot midday periods to avoid overheating and sunburn.

Optimal temperature

All varieties of variegated violets respond gratefully to being kept in rooms with significantly lower temperatures.

Variegated violets do not like high temperatures.

within the range of +18 +20°C is ideal Higher rates can lead to the disappearance of variegation, changes in leaf shape and slower development.

In the hot months, Saintpaulias will feel more comfortable on northern window sills or on the lower tiers of shelving, provided there is sufficient light. During the cold period, violets should be especially protected from sudden changes in temperature and drafts.

Necessary fertilizers

A slowdown in the process of photosynthesis due to the lack of chlorophyll in a large number of leaf cells and the abundant flowering of variegated violets leads to the need to apply special fertilizers.

As a rule, plants require the following basic chemical elements:

  • nitrogen;
  • phosphorus;
  • potassium;

as well as a complex of microelements included in any fertilizer for indoor crops.

Each life process requires its own feeding:

  • phosphorus and potassium are responsible for the formation of buds, flowering and the general condition of violets;
  • Nitrogen fertilizers are applied during the growth period to increase the green mass of the plant.

CAREFULLY! Variegated Saintpaulias do not tolerate frequent fertilizing with a high percentage of nitrogen. This element is responsible for the process of production of chlorophyll by the plant: the more nitrogen, the better the green pigment is formed, and this can lead to the disappearance of light patterns on the leaf plates.

Feeding rules

Fertilizing for variegated violets differs in certain nuances, the implementation of which creates comfortable conditions for the plants:

  • Feeding of adult plants is carried out once a month when the need for the procedure is visually determined ;

Fertilize the violet as needed.

  • each subsequent procedure must be accompanied by monitoring the percentage of essential elements in accordance with the life phase of the violet;
  • young rooted Saintpaulias with a large number of white leaves should be fed more often with nitrogen fertilizers to enhance the green color and improve their nutrition;
  • it is necessary to remember that the decorative effect of variegated violets depends on the brightness and volume of the light pattern, and it disappears when overfed with nitrogen ;
  • To balance the green and light parts of the leaves of adult variegated leaves, you can alternate the percentage of elements in the fertilizer.

Unpretentious varieties of violets

Be sure to take a closer look at these varieties of violets, especially if this is your first Saintpaulia. Experienced violet growers say that these plants are almost impossible to kill! For a full description of the variety with the name and name of the breeder, see the photo.

Features of flowering

The first varieties of variegated Saintpaulias developed did not please flower growers with the special beauty of their flowering. These were violets with simple corolla shapes, painted in classic blue, pink or white colors.

Thanks to the work of breeders, the flowering of modern violets with variegated foliage is no different from ordinary green varieties - the same variety of shapes, sizes and wide range of colors.

The only difference is the rather slow processes of bud formation and corolla blooming . This is a characteristic feature of the group - all life processes take much longer.

Like all violets, variegated leaves bloom better without overfeeding with nitrogen fertilizers.

Attention! A feature of variegated Saintpaulias is the increase in decorativeness of the leaf rosette after the opening of the first corollas.

Classification of domestic violets by flower

So, as noted earlier, violet flowers are characterized by size, shape, number of petals (or degree of doubleness) and petal edge. Let's look at each concept in more detail.

By flower size

Small-flowered

The flower does not exceed 2 cm in diameter.

Medium flowered

The diameter of the flower is 2-4 cm.

Large-flowered

The size of the flower in diameter varies from 4 to 6 cm.

Particularly large-flowered

The diameter of the flower starts from 6 cm.

According to the shape of flowers

Pansies

The classic shape of a violet flower: five petals, the top two slightly smaller than the rest.
Examples with photos:

Blue Boy (Armacost & Royston) RM-Vasilisa (N. Skornyakova)

Vintage Wine (S.Sorano) Mac's Black Pearl (G.McDonald) Apache Magic (J.Munk)

Star

The shape of the flower resembles a five-pointed star with rays of the same size.
The rays can be sharp or rounded. Examples with photos:

Frozen in Time (S.Sorano) Blue Fog (Morev) ND-Murano Glass (Danilova-Suvorova) ND-Swarovski Crystal (Danilova-Suvorova) Rhapsodie Clementine (Holtkamp)

Bowl

The petals of the flower seem to be fused and the bud does not open completely, as, for example, in a pansy, thereby forming a shape similar to a bowl.
It is also called round. Examples with photos:

NK-March of Mendelssohn (N. Kozak)

EL-Full Chalice (E.Lebetskaya) Ming Dynasty (I.Fredette)

Wasp

The most unusual and easily recognizable flower shape.
The petals are narrow and tucked at the edges. In general, if you look closely, the flower really looks like a wasp. Examples with names and photos:

Mac's Searing Stinger (G.McDonald) Lunar Lily white Luverly Wasp (J.Dates)

According to the degree of flower terry

All of the above forms of Saintpaulia flowers may differ from each other in the number of petals or the degree of terryness.

Note! One violet may contain two types of flowers at once, for example, simple and semi-double or semi-double and double.

Simple

Thus, a simple flower is characterized by five petals arranged in one row. Below are the names and photos of the most prominent representatives:

Optimara My Desire (Holtkamp) Rob's Monkeyshines (R. Robinson) Rob's Boolaroo (R. Robinson) Sensational Sandra (Ray)

Scallops

Propagation of Saintpaulia

There are several ways to obtain new copies.

Propagation of Saintpaulia by leaf cuttings

Using leaf cuttings. To do this, the plate is cut with a sterile knife along with the petiole, leaving a length of 4-5 cm. The wound is sprinkled with crushed activated carbon. The powder is also added to water, into which plant fragments are then placed (1 tablet per glass of liquid). The first roots will appear in 2.5-3 weeks. After this, the cuttings are planted in small pots and covered with polyethylene for 1-2 weeks.

Growing Saintpaulia from seeds

Seeds. Select source plants that do not show signs of disease. Then artificial pollination is carried out with a soft brush. To do this, pollen from one specimen is transferred to the pistils of another. The pods will be fully ripe in about 4 months. To plant the extracted seeds, the top layer of soil is moistened. The material is mixed with sand and distributed on the soil without sprinkling. The dishes are covered with glass and placed in a warm place. Picking is carried out when the rosettes are sufficiently developed.

Reproduction by stepson

Stepsons. In order for them to appear, the growing point of the plant is removed. After some time, daughter shoots grow. When they reach 4-5 cm in diameter, they are separated and placed in individual containers.

Classification of indoor violets by rosette

As noted at the beginning of the article, the outlet is characterized by size and type. Let's figure it out.

According to socket size

Based on size, violets are divided into 5 groups: micromini, mini, semi-mini, standard and large standard.

Micromini

The tiniest ones. The size of the rosette of an adult flower does not exceed 10 cm. They are also called microminiatures. Symbol – mM (from the English Microminiature).

Mini

Miniature Saintpaulias do not exceed 10-15 cm in size (meaning an adult plant). Symbol – M (from the English Miniature).

Semimini

The size of the rosette of a semi-miniature violet varies between 15-20 cm. Symbol - SM (from English Semiminiature)

Standard

The size of a standard violet in diameter does not exceed 20-40 cm. Symbol - S (from the English Standard).

Large standard

The rosette of large standard violets is up to 40 cm in diameter. The designation “large standard” is acceptable. Conventionally designated L (from the English Large).

By socket type

Regular

Classic rosette shape with symmetrical arrangement of sheets.

Trailer

A trailer plant has several growing points. Trailers, in turn, are divided into canopy and cluster trailers.

Ampel trailers

The plant has an elongated stem that hangs over the edge of the pot.

Photos of overhead trailers with the name:

AN-Madame Rocha (N.Andreeva) Ramblin Peach (S.Sorano) 23-Irtysh River (Ya.Zubo)

Milky Way Trail (J.Stahl) AN-Ivy League (N.Andreeva)

Bush trailers

The rosette of the plant is ordinary, but it bushes very strongly, growing lateral branches.

Photos of bush trailers with names:

Carousel Pony (S.Sorano) Dresden Doll (Harris)

Demer`s Pixie Belle (Demers) Flashy Trail (H.Pittman) Hot Pink Bells (Harris)

Chantaspring (RPHair)

Growing problems

Any troubles with Saintpaulias from the group of variegated varieties occur due to errors in plant care.

Loss of leaf decorativeness

The disappearance of variegated leaf color can occur due to:

  • temperature violations;
  • applying large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers;
  • improper lighting;
  • drafts.

Variegation can disappear due to errors in care.

Correction of maintenance regimes and careful care will allow the plant to regain its charm.

Causes of deformation of rosette leaves

Some varieties of variegated violets are initially predisposed when forming a rosette to pull the leaf blades upward or bend them under the rosette. In this case , using a corset and monitoring the growth of Saintpaulia will help.

A change in leaf shape can occur due to too high temperatures, exposure to bright sunlight when kept on a windowsill, drying out of the soil, lack of lighting and other maintenance errors.

It is necessary to analyze the reasons, adjust the care and correct the negative consequences for the violet with care and love.

Variegated violets

Let us remind you that, depending on the foliage, violets are simple, when the color of the leaves contains only green, and variegated, when the color contains inclusions of other colors in addition to green. In this section we present 10 of the most beautiful, in our opinion, variegated varieties of violets with names and photos.

Diseases and pests

Violet is susceptible to the same diseases as other indoor plants. They usually appear as a result of violation of growing rules and are destructive to the flower .

Saintpaulia may develop:

  1. Powdery mildew - appears during the off-season. It is enough to spray once with any fungicide (for example, topaz).
  2. Fungal rot is a consequence of improper care. The best treatment is prevention. From time to time, water the soil with trichodermine or phytosporin .
  3. Thrips - attack young leaves and flowers. In this case they resort to chemicals (Aktellik, Fitoverm, Aktara).

  4. Mealybug - cotton balls appear at the base of the leaves. Any specialized drug will do .

Violets are compact house plants that are distinguished by their beauty and abundance of flowering. Saintpaulia exhibitions are held regularly, where you can see the most incredible colors and shapes. Decorate your home with such specimens, and they will always delight you with their unique look.

Rare varieties of violets

It is almost impossible to find whimsical Saintpaulias or various kinds of “perversions” at exhibitions.

So, our selection of rare varieties of Uzambara violets with photos (we duplicate the names of varieties of foreign selection in Russian + approximate translation):

Biological description

Representatives of the genus are low-growing evergreen perennial herbaceous plants.

Stems are shortened, with a basal rosette of leaves.

The leaves are leathery, covered with villi, round, usually with a slightly unequal heart-shaped base, with a rounded or short-pointed apex. They can be either a uniform green color or spotted.

Hybrid Saintpaulia leaf

The flowers have five petals, collected in racemes. There are two stamens. The gynoecium is paracarpous (that is, unilocular with wall placentation), of two carpels. It has one pistil with a superior ovary.

Hybrid Saintpaulia bud

Saintpaulia also has a calyx consisting of five sepals.

The fruit is a capsule with numerous small seeds with a straight embryo.

Saintpaulia is characterized by rapid growth. Life expectancy is 3-4 years, then decorative qualities are lost. Such specimens are rejuvenated by re-rooting the top. Uzambara violet blooms almost continuously.
